Monday Morning Box Office Report – June 9, 2008

It’s a bit of a surprise to find that the Dreamworks animated film Kung Fu Panda was #1 at the box office this past weekend, but it proves once again that family-friendly CG movies are never to be underestimated. The Jack Black flick took in a whopping $60 million, nearly $20 million more than Adam Sandler’s You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. Zohan also did quite well, however, opening even stronger than last year’s I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Indy was back with a vengeance to overtake Sex and the City for the #3 spot, while The Strangers claimed the #5 spot with approximately $9 million earned. Iron Man and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian also continued to do decent business at the #6 and #7 spots respectively.

1. Kung Fu Panda — $60M
2. You Don’t Mess with the Zohan — $40M
3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull — $22.8M
4. Sex and the City — $21.3M
5. The Strangers — $9.29M
6. Iron Man — $7.52M
7. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian — $5.53M
8. What Happens in Vegas… — $3.4M
9. Baby Mama — $779K
10. Made of Honor — $775K

  1. Are CG movies a lot cheaper to make than a “normal” movie like Zohan?

  2. They take a lot longer– I know that.

“Kung Fu Panda” reminds me of a CG version of “Beverly Hlls Ninja.” An overweight, unlikely ninja. Hilarity.

    Right?
