Guy Ritchie Signs on to Direct Sherlock Holmes

Last time we heard about a new Sherlock Holmes movie from Warner Brothers, Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday) was the guy that was supposedly going to direct it. Now it looks like they’ve changed their mind, and gone with another British director who seems equally ill-suited for the task. Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, RocknRolla) has signed on to helm the movie, which is being planned for a 2010 release.

The movie is supposedly based on an upcoming Sherlock Holmes comic book, rather than one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories. The script was written by Tony Peckham (The Human Factor), but will be touched up by Ritchie himself. Warners say they are looking to “re-invent” the iconic detective, which has me a little worried. Producer Lionel Wigram has previously stated that “the new Holmes would be more adventuresome and take advantage of his skills as a boxer and swordsman”. That’s all fine and dandy, but I don’t want to see Sherlock Holmes in some high-tech future or on a corrupt police force or something lame like that. I just want to see him in Victorian-era London where he belongs.

  1. I hope he restrains himself.

  2. Is this true or is it just a rumor? Just a few minutes ago I read that it wasn’t confirmed yet. Either way, Ritchie and Holmes sound like a strange match-up, but I love Snatch and Lock, Stock enough that I’ll keep an eye on just about anything Guy is attached to. I sure as hell can’t wait for Rocknrolla.

  3. I’ve never read any Sherlock Holmes books or seen the shows so I have no attachment to the character. My little knowledge of the franchise does let me know that he is a thinking man who probably isn’t suited for swordfighting. Why turn this into an action flick? There are better things out there that actually include swordfighting.

With Guy Ritchie attached I lose all hope before I even had any.
