30 Days of Night to Get Direct to DVD Sequel, Wake The Dead Gets a Director

I wasn’t entirely impressed with David Slade’s adaptation of the Steve Niles vampire comic 30 Days of Night, but the movie certainly did well enough that sequel talk cropped up almost immediately following its release. It seems like 30 Days of Night 2 would be a no brainer; not only because of the success of the first movie, but also because there are more comics to draw stories from.
So when I read today over at Bloody Disgusting that a sequel to 30 Days of Night was in the works from Ghost House Pictures, I wasn’t too shocked. What was a bit surprising, however, was the fact that they were thinking of making it a direct to video feature. Perhaps Josh Hartnett didn’t sign on for part two? (From what I understand, his character does come back later in the series.) It’s all up in the air at the moment, but we’ll have more info as it develops.
In other Steve Niles news, his graphic novel Wake The Dead is being turned into a movie as well. Jay Russell (The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, Ladder 49) has signed on to direct, with James V. Hart (Dracula, Contact, The Last Mimzy) writing the script. WETA will be doing the special effects, and it is being touted as a classic monster movie of sorts. Sounds cool, except… the director of The Water Horse and Tuck Everlasting? Really?

I’ll say this for 30 Days of Night: I liked the movie better than the comic. However, both felt very rushed to me. An entire month’s worth of Vampire-ness in either three issues on the page or less than two hours on the screen lead to me feeling that both incarnations of the story jumped around too much and could have been paced better. I wouldn’t be opposed to a sequel, but I’m certainly not going to say that I’m excited for it.
Posted by Rian on June 2nd, 2008The movie was extremely rushed. It was also not that good. (Awful ending.) I don’t think it’s very surprising that they are making another one, though. It’s all about making sequels to movies that made money today. How very boring.
