Chuck Palahniuk’s Choke Trailer

After watching some early clips from Clark Gregg’s adaptation of the Chuck Palahniuk book Choke, I wasn’t overly impressed with the tone and production quality of the film. But being a fan of Palahniuk’s work and also of star Sam Rockwell, I continued to maintain some hope for the project and was looking forward to seeing an official trailer.

That trailer has now arrived online, and while it’s far from being a masterpiece of marketing, it does do a better job at conveying the dark and depraved subject matter of the book (ie. the story of a guy who pretends to choke on food in restaurants in order to get sympathy cheques and cruises sex addiction recovery workshops to pick up chicks). The choice of the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah song “Satan Said Dance” as backing music doesn’t hurt either. Still, as I’ve mentioned previously, the biggest hurdle for this film is going to be overcoming the imagery of David Fincher’s slick and stylish Fight Club that people still have in their heads. I don’t think it can compete, but perhaps there is still hope for Choke to be a decent little indie flick on its own terms. Choke hits theatres on September 26th; check out the full trailer below.

  1. Great book. Hope the movie lives up to it.

  2. I want to be excited for this movie since it’s Palahniuk, but the trailer just looks like a simple, everyday comedy to me. I haven’t read the book, so I’m not sure what it’s like, and I still fully intend to see the movie, but I’m just not really excited.

  3. The movie is very good. If you go into it expecting a visual masterpiece you will be sorely disappointed. The film doesn’t attempt at all to be anything like Fight Club, resorting to a very clean and simple visual and stylistic aesthetic.
