Awesome, a couple Dario Argento movies right off the bat that I haven’t seen yet. I could be wrong, but I heard Asia dis some nude scenes in Stendhal Syndrome and with being Dario’s daughter, that seems kinda creepy, but I am still down to see the film.
Posted by Primal on May 30th, 2008I would definitely be down with “The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.”
I’ve always wanted to see that, and why not see it for the firt time on high def!
Now I can’t wait to get myself a blu-ry player. PS3, here I come.
“Maniac” will be a rental for me– always wanted to see that one too.
Posted by Jon Rocks on May 30th, 2008Now all I need is a Blu-ray player…
Posted by Rian on May 30th, 2008I’ve been checking Blue Underground for this as well! The only problem I’ve had with owning a Blu-ray so far is that I’ve been dying for some Dario and the like. Stendhal Syndrome isn’t the best though. I have this Troma distributed version that looked like an old VHS so hopefully Blue Underground has a better master.
Can’t wait until someone releases Phenomena in Blu-ray!
Posted by Ryan on May 30th, 2008the final coutdown on blue ray sweet havt seen that shit in years
Posted by paulie on May 30th, 2008Argento is a good thing, and FIRE&ICE rocks, I like me some Bakshi from time to time…that one is due for a revisit.
I second the Phenomena request in BLU, (but there is time, I’ve no desire to upgrade at the moment and my regular DVDs of most of Argentos back-catalogue won’t be ‘upgraded’ any time soon.
Posted by Kurt on May 30th, 2008I will never buy an high def player, they’ll be obsolete in 2 years anyway when digital and on demand movies take over completley
Posted by Drew on May 31st, 2008Blu-ray won! Why haven’t the fucking prices come down! Sales of bluray actually when down after HD-DVD died. Drop the price!
Posted by theman on May 31st, 2008theman,
I guess that’s one negative side effect of the format wars. No more competition equals no more competitive pricing! (Aside from standard dvd, which when it comes to most new releases, is insanely over priced.)
Posted by Jay C. on June 1st, 2008One of the things that killed HD-DVD was that it was too cheap for CE companies to make that they wouldn’t make any money of it. So companies bowed out before Toshiba pulled the plug. People are so impatient these days for prices to come down. Since when has that ever happened when a new technology is released? Calm down people, it will get there, just give it time. DVD players were more expensive when they first came out and it took a few years for them to come down in price.
All good things come for those who wait.
The best Blu Ray player at the moment is the PS3. It’s a great value package, a gaming machine for the kids, a DVD player, a Blu Ray player, web surfer and a media center to stream movies from your computer. So for 400 bucks I’d say thats a pretty good deal. Wallmart and Best Buy have recently released their in-house label Blu Ray players for under 300 dollars. So prices are coming down.
I’ll be getting the William Lustig titles for sure, I’ve got a big hard on for his films. And to see Tom Savini’s work in HD is going to be great. Going to have to check out The Last Countdown. Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman produced that film.
Posted by swarez on June 2nd, 2008The Last Countdown is definitely worth a look. You’ll be either pleased or disappointed to know that you’d never know it was produced by Lloyd Kaufman.
Now I wait for the first Troma Blu Ray.
Posted by Jay C. on June 2nd, 2008This is even more exciting than the list of Criterion Blu-Ray titles. Of the announced titles, Bird With the Crystal Plumage is the best by far. Some others I’d love to see are the Larry Cohen films, Django, Revolver, and above all others, Bad Boy Bubby, which is one of my favorite films, period. Jay, I’m interested to hear whether or not you have seen this and what you think of it if you have. It feels almost like a Werner Herzog version of Forrest Gump only both darker and more optimistic than that sounds.
Posted by mahotoe on June 2nd, 2008I haven’t seen it. It’s a Blue Underground release? I’ll have to look it up and place an order.
Too bad because I just ordered Fight for Your Life, Conquest and The Shape of Things to Come.
Posted by Jay C. on June 2nd, 2008Bad Boy Bubby is one fucked up movie. It was a big hit here in Iceland and heavily discussed film.
Posted by Swarez on June 2nd, 2008When you think about the story it is scarily like the horror that was just discovered in Austria.
Yes, Bubby is available from Blue Underground – their site has the trailer, which gives a good indication as to what you’ll be getting into. Which is pretty much Passion of the Christ for atheists. Except it’s intentionally funny. It is also, as Swarez said, pretty fucked up.
The filmmaker, Rolf de Heer, is severely underrated. He
is without a doubt doing some of the most interesting work being done in film right now. In Bubby he used several experimental techniques, including sewing binaural microphones into the lead actor’s wig to better replicate what the character hears. He also used a different look for each section of the film, and used multiple cinematographers to help accomplish this.
de Heer has directed several other excellent films, including The Quiet Room, The Tracker and Ten Canoes.
And that is the end of my commercial for the films of Rolf de Heer.
Posted by mahotoe on June 2nd, 2008Bird With the Crystal Plumage is a great Giallo. I love me some Giallo.
Now to get a Blue Ray and an HD TV.
