P.T. Anderson Interested in Directing Metal Gear Solid?

Most. Ridiculous. Rumour. Ever. There, I just had to get that out of the way. We have an update from Kotaku this week on the percolating Metal Gear Solid movie adaptation, and after speaking with Konami’s Aki Saito, it seems that a certain Oscar-nominated director has shown some interest in directing. Who is this mystery man? Why none other than Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights). Can you think of anything more bizarre?
I don’t know how or where this rumour started, but it’s gotta be total B.S… right? Maybe someone spoke to P.T. Anderson’s agent and he said they’d get back to them, but I just can’t see P.T. Anderson actually playing a video game much less wanting to direct a movie based on one. It doesn’t suit his M.O. at all. Still, if someone out there is hoping to bring legitimacy to video game movies, I suppose this would certainly be one way to do it. Thoughts?

I wonder if they were actually talking to Paul W.S. Anderson?
Posted by Stephen on May 13th, 2008Ahaha now there’s a good theory!
Posted by Sean on May 13th, 2008Considering the bizzare storyline of the MGS games, this would seem right up his alley. After all, not too many people thought that he would make a period piece like There will be Blood after directiong Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch Drunk Love. I wouldn’t be suprised if this were more than a rumor.
Posted by Matt on May 13th, 2008I think it’s total bullshit.
Posted by Rick on May 13th, 2008I think this would be awesome. Awesome.
Posted by Jon Rocks on May 13th, 2008Have you guys played these games? I think Matt hit it on the head… the storyline is surprisingly complex and they are probably the most cinematic games ever made. In fact, they seem to be revolutionary in just about every way. It may just be a rumor, but it’s also at least a little bit plausible.
Posted by Derek on May 13th, 2008I’m somewhat familiar since I worked on Gamecube port of the first game. I do think that MGS has a shot at making a good movie since most of the game is just one long cinematic anyway. However, can you actually see P.T. Anderson directing a movie with nuclear weapons and ninjas and sword fights in it? I’d love to see him try his hand at something like this, but I just don’t see it happening.
Posted by Sean on May 13th, 2008….that being said, if it really is Paul W.S. Anderson it’ll be hilarious.
Posted by Derek on May 13th, 2008Hahaha…. yeeeah. Very true.
Hey wow, you worked on the GC port? That’s awesome. I’m actually just playing through the series for the first time, so I’m a little amped on it at the moment. Into the second one right now and it just continues to blow my mind.
Posted by Derek on May 13th, 2008Most likely it’s the other more hated (but not by me) Anderson.
Posted by Swarez on May 13th, 2008Yeah I have to admit I’ve only played part of MGS2 and I haven’t even touched MGS3… but I definitely know part 1 quite well.
According to the quote on Kotaku the guy from Konami specifically said “Paul Thomas Anderson”, not just “Paul Anderson”. But really, who knows.
Posted by Sean on May 13th, 2008These games however are fucking pain to get through. Not because they are hard but because of the fuck awful writing and over the top acting. Solid Snake sounds like he’s taking a shit all the time while he ponders the meaning of life. Fortune cooky philosophy bullshit that people for some reason mistake for good writing.
Posted by Swarez on May 13th, 2008This shouldn’t happen, nor will it ever happen. ‘Nuff said.
Posted by Rian on May 13th, 2008This better not be true, i dont know if i could respect the man anymore if he went off and directed a video game adaption.
Posted by Drew on May 13th, 2008C’mon guys. Obviously someone along the way confused the two Paul Andersons.
Posted by Rusty James on May 13th, 2008Rumor probably started after hearing Verbinski doing a Bioshock movie and wishful thinking fanboys are just throwing this ridiculous idea out there.
