Monday Morning Box Office Report - May 12, 2008

Stark Industries stock continued to soar this week after another strong weekend at the box office. Iron Man took in another $50.5 million, clearly helped along by good word of mouth and positive reviews across the board. Meanwhile, The Wachowski Brothers didn’t fare quite so well with their Speed Racer flick, which managed just over $20 million (although to be fair, it could have been a lot worse). It just barely squeaked by the romantic comedy What Happens in Vegas to claim the #2 spot. Made of Honor and Baby Mama rounded out the top 5, as all the female moviegoers sought out Iron Man alternatives. Forgetting Sarah Marshall also passed the $50 million mark, but it’s still nowhere near the mega-hit status of Superbad or Knocked Up.
1. Iron Man — $50.5M
2. Speed Racer — $20.2M
3. What Happens in Vegas… — $20M
4. Made of Honor — $7.6M
5. Baby Mama — $5.77M
6. Forgetting Sarah Marshall — $3.78M
7. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay — $3.15M
8. The Forbidden Kingdom — $1.9M
9. Nim’s Island — $1.32M
10. Redbelt — $1.14M

Wow. Redbelt made $1 million. Ouch.
Posted by Jon Rocks on May 12th, 2008I think Redbelt was only advertised on ESPN, which is exactly the wrong place to advertise a movie like this. The Mixed Martial Arts is somewhat of window dressing on the film, there is only the most minimal amount of fighting onscreen.
The film has a fair bit more of a GHOST-DOG angle to it, another film that failed miserably at the box-office because it only has a limited audience.
However, if you are into the Mamet vibe, this one should be seen before it evaporates from its wide release come Thursday.
As a rumination on how to be classically-honorable in a modern western society, it’s a lean-and-mean film.
Oh, and Chiwetel Ejiofor is GOD.

I’m not surprised by Speed Racer’s take this weekend.
Posted by Swarez on May 12th, 2008Criticizing (or complimenting) Red Belt on the quality of the martial arts is kinda like doing the same with the science-accuracy in Star Wars. It is nearly 100% irrelevant to what the movie is actually attempting to do. I can see the MMA crowd getting sorely disappointed simply from not understanding that this is not what the movie is about.
Posted by Kurt on May 12th, 2008It’s too bad Speed Racer’s not doing better, because it was better than I expected. Then again, if everyone was expecting it to be as good as I was expecting it to be, I guess I can understand why more people aren’t going out of their way to see it. It’s at #2 though, so I guess I couldn’t ask for a whole lot more.
