Open Forum Friday: What Are Your Summer Box Office Predictions?

I realize I’m a little bit late in getting this discussion going, but no one can resist box office predictions so I just went ahead and posted anyway. Every weekend from now until the end of August has a major blockbuster (or sometimes two) attached to it, and while there aren’t as many sequels as last summer, there are still plenty of familiar faces expected to bring out audiences in droves. With this many movies competing for attention, it seems unlikely that all of them will meet expectations. Iron Man has already delivered way above expectations, while Speed Racer is currently tracking significantly lower, for example.
So which movies will rise to the top? To kick things off, I thought I would offer my best guess as to what the top 5 highest grossing movies of the summer will be:
1. Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
2. The Dark Knight
3. Hancock
4. Iron Man
5. Sex and the City
I can’t say there was a ton of thought behind it, but I’m going out on a limb and saying that Indiana Jones 4 won’t crack the top 5 (although it will be close). I don’t know, I just feel like the younger generation may not embrace it for some reason, but I could be totally off base. Also, I know some people feel that Sex and the City may not perform well, but I think women will band together and find refuge in it from all the men in tights.
Wall-E, Get Smart and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan will also probably do quite well. Some other possible wild cards are Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Mamma Mia! and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. So now it’s your turn. What do you think will be the biggest hits and misses at the box office this summer? Give us your thoughts here on Open Forum Friday.

I couldn’t care less. I care so little that I comment on the post.
Posted by Henrik on May 9th, 2008I actually think that Sex and the City will be closer to the top than most people think. General movie nerds have no idea how popular this show is with women and I’m willing to bet that they will see this film in droves.
In no particular order I think these films will be in the top five.
Indy 4
Posted by swarez on May 9th, 2008Sex and the City
Wall-E
Iron Man
Batman
I’m going with…
1. Dark Knight
2. Indy IV
3. Wall-E
4. Iron Man
5. Narnia
I just think the pull of my top two choices will be stronger than anything out there. Wall-E will get the family vote, pushing Iron Man back.
Posted by Emperor Fabulous on May 9th, 2008Here are my predictions:
1. Wall-E
2. Batman
3. Sex and the City
4. Indy IV
5. Iron Man
I have two friends who are going to see Sex and the City, and they are males. Now, a lot of women will go and see it (obviously), but I feel like it has the potential to be like Titanic, meaning it will have repeat viewings galore, be a perfect date movie (I mean, I can tolerate the show somewhat, but the trailer does make the movie look like crap). Pixar always owns the box office too. Heath Ledger’s last screen performance will put asses in the seats too.

Posted by Mike on May 9th, 2008The Dark Knight
Wall E
Indy 4
Iron Man
Narnia
I don’t know why evreyone is going with Wall-E, Ratatouillie didnt make that much.
My Picks: 1.Indiana Jones
Posted by Drew on May 9th, 20082.Iron Man
3.The Dark Knight
4.Prince Caspian
5.Sex and the City
I think in the top 5, in no particular order, will be Indy 4, Speed Racer, Iron Man, the Dark Knight and Wall-E.
Posted by Captain N on May 9th, 2008My guesses are:
1. Indy IV (just hoping)
Posted by Stephen on May 9th, 20082. Wall-E (Pixar always does well)
3. The Dark Knight (great trailer and building on great first film)
4. Prince Caspian (sequel to successful movie)
5. Sex and the City (nearly every woman I know loves the show)
None of the reviews I’ve read for Indy 4 thus far have been good, but then again, Spiderman 3 got horrible reviews and still did great at the box office, so who knows? I don’t know enough about Sex and the City or Narnia’s audiences to wager a guess as to how well they’ll do, but I’d expect Wall-E, Dark Knight, Iron Man, Hancock, and Indiana Jones to take up whichever spots those two don’t occupy on the top five. An inspired list, I know…
Posted by Rian on May 9th, 2008My guess is…
1. Hancock
Posted by Dane on May 9th, 20082. Dark Knight
3. Prince Caspian
4. INDY 4
5. Iron Man
Spider-Man 3 got bad reviews because everyone wanted to be the one to burst the bubble for the fanboys! It’s a great film. One can only dream of Jon Favreau trying as hard as Sam Raimi, but alas, it’s easier to not.
Posted by Henrik on May 9th, 2008The only ones that would interest me are:
1. Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Posted by Baychuk on May 10th, 20082. The Dark Knight
3. Indianna Jones
Tropic Thunder is going to be the surprise hit of the summer… and Caspian will not even register.
Posted by rot on May 10th, 2008daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn, on Friday Speed Racer made less money than the Kutcher/Diaz movie
Posted by Goon on May 10th, 20081: Indy 4
Posted by Kieron on May 10th, 20082: Prince Caspian
3: Hancock
4: The Dark Knight
5: Wall E
I was really pulling for Speed Racer. It was a good movie. Ambitious one too. I suppose it’ll get more recognition in 10 years when it builds up a cult following.
Posted by Captain N on May 10th, 2008well, I’m doing my part Captain N – got an IMAX date for it this week.
Gotta see the beehive weapon just one more time, at least
Posted by Goon on May 10th, 2008Good man, Goon.
I am honestly shocked at the backlash people are giving Speed Racer. There are a large majority that won’t even go see the film. I found it to be inventive, fun, ambitious and stylistic. I understand the story wasn’t exactly the most complex but the characters were certainly likable and charming. To me, Speed Racer, is a film that got it. It got its source material right and updated it to a more modern time. Something new comes from Hollywood and it gets shot down.
Hopefully Speed Racer will be a film that keeps making consistent money over the summer through word of mouth, cause most everyone who has seen it (critics aside) have come out very positive. I’d love to see the further adventures of Speed and friends.
Posted by Captain N on May 10th, 2008“cause most everyone who has seen it (critics aside) have come out very positive.”
I’m not sure thats accurate. People who werent sure but were interested seem to have been pleased… theres a lot of people who would avoid it like the plague regardless of who likes it.
Posted by Goon on May 11th, 2008Yea, I’ve noticed that there are people who flat out wont see go and see it. Which is odd cause I’m sure they’ve actually paid to go and see worse (or went and saw that Ashton Kutcher/Cameron Diaz movie instead)
Posted by Captain N on May 11th, 2008My predictions(Overall summer winners):
1.Wall-E
Posted by 3dguy on May 11th, 20082.Indiana Jones
3.Prince Caspian
4.The Dark Knight
5.Hancock or Ku fu panda
k, i think itll be . . .
Posted by Jason on May 11th, 20081. Indiana Jones and the Kingdon of the crystal skull
2. The chronicles of Narnia : Prince Caspian
3. Wall-E
4. Hancock
5. The Dark Knight
6. Iron Man
7. Kung Fu Panda
8. Sex and the City
9. The Happening
10. The Incredible Hulk
Hancock will do BIG business if the trailer is any indication. It’ll surprise people. However, I believe the big winner will be The Dark Knight. Wow, this is actually a really hard call…
