Spaced Finally Gets A North American (Region 1) DVD Release

Well it only took them 7 or 8 years, but Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s cult classic British TV series Spaced is finally about to be released on DVD here in North America. For years I had heard about how amazing this show was, and only recently have I finally been able to watch most of it on Showcase here in Canada. I have to admit, Spaced didn’t blow me away as much as I thought it would (sacrilege, I know), but I’ll definitely be in line to pick up this DVD set in July thanks to the plethora of cool extras that are included with it.

BBC Video is throwing even more stuff on this 3-disc set than the British releases had, including new commentary tracks from Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes and guests Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Diablo Cody, Matt Stone, Patton Oswalt and Bill Hader. Other features include an on-stage Q&A from a 2007 cast re-union, a feature length documentary, and the Homage-o-Meter (pop-up trivia track explaining all the various pop culture references in case you just didn’t get them).

The DVD release is no doubt a reaction to the much-maligned upcoming U.S. remake of Spaced, as confirmed by Tarantino’s quote on the cover: “The one, the only… SPACED. Accept no substitutes.” Spaced: The Complete Series hits North American shores on July 22nd for a suggested price of $49.98.

  1. Exciting news. I just watched this series recently and really really enjoyed it… more than I expected to, actually. Has anyone seen Black Books (another great British show)? It’s only flaw is that it has a laugh track, but it’s seriously great. Nearly everyone from Spaced has a cameo in it, too.

  2. $50 is a bit much, no? I love this show– in fact I’ve had it on dvd for like 2 years (Bootleg, obviously.) If I can find it for $20 eventually I’ll get it.

  3. Love the show, actually more prefer than those 2 big screen movies made by the same team
full of cult movie spoof or homage, love it! especially remembering one episode in season 2, the end is fully identical with the final scene in EMPIRE STRIKE BACK, and borrow the same great John Williams score, just damn hilarious!
This is the first thing I saw with extremely frequent short flash back scene, I’m wondering if those later show like ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT is influenced by this?

  4. Fuuuuudge! I just bought the R2 set. Karn sarn it!
    Double dip here I come.

  5. I cannot goddam wait to own this. More than once I almost bought a region-free DVD player just so I could watch this show in decent quality as opposed to the heinous versions that I downloaded a few years ago. Now the powers-that-be just need to release a box set of all four seasons of Peep Show on region 1 and I’ll be set.
