Twilight Trailer

Unless you’re a frequent reader of young adult novels, you might not have heard of Twilight just yet, but the way things are going it will be tough to remain ignorant much longer. This is the first in a series of novels written by Stephenie Meyer (who just may be on the verge of becoming the next J.K. Rowling) about a group of vampires, and a seventeen year old girl who falls in love with one of them. Summit Entertainment (Step Up, American Pie, The Hottie and the Nottie) are turning the books into a movie franchise, and they are hoping it will be huge.
The first teaser trailer for Twilight has just hit the web (it will play in front of Speed Racer, apparently) and after watching it I found myself still wondering what all the excitement is about. Isn’t this basically just The Lost Boys but with a girl as the main character? Sure, vampire movies are bound to have some overlap, but I’m not sensing anything even remotely intriguing here. Director Catherine Hardwicke previously did Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown, which might lead you to believe she has a good understanding of youth culture. On the other hand, she also directed The Nativity Story. The screenplay was written by Melissa Rosenberg (Dexter, The O.C., Step Up) and stars Kristen Stewart (Into The Wild, Undertow) and Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory from the Harry Potter movies). Does anyone else see potential in this trailer? Has anyone out there read the books?

I can’t speak as someone who hasn’t read the books but knowing the story, the characters and what is to come, I must admit that the trailer surprised me. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but the actors fit the roles much better than I expected. Obviously the tension isn’t there for the average viewer but the fangirls (I doubt many men have read the series) will immediately pick-up on the sexual tension that’ll run through the film.
As for “The Lost Boys” connection…it’s not *really* warranted though you’re right, there’s a tiny bit of overlap in the stories in that they are both love stories.
Posted by Marina on May 6th, 2008I’ve never read the books, and am probably nowhere near being a member of their target audience, so it’s no big surprise that this trailer didn’t do a thing for me. Oh well.
Posted by Rian on May 6th, 2008I’ve read all 3 books, probably that´s the reason why I think the teaser is great. Before I was not convinced with Robert Patinson as Edward, but I loved to ear his voice and the way he acts in the teaser. Kristen looks exactly as I imagined Bella.
The story is not very original, and it is written in a very simple way, but Stephenie Meyer imprints such a sexual tension between those two, that we can actually feel it while we are reading it. And above all, we can really relate with some of the characters. That´s always something cool.
Besides, I always welcome fantasy movies. Of course some end up being disgusting, but I don´t think this will be the case.
I’m sorry for my english, but I’m portuguese, so, I guess that is an excuse for possible mistakes.
Posted by Minerva McGonagall on May 7th, 2008I’m 29 and not a huge fan of fiction. However, my girlfriend (26) who absolutely loves Harry Potter ended up reading the Twilight series. She was so excited that I had to read them just to get her to stop nagging me. But OMG… I couldn’t put the books down. I read the first in one day. The next day I bought the other two books and read them both in the next two days. I became a little depressed after I finished the third and had nothing else to read until August. So yeah.. the series has definitely got something. I’m afraid I’m actually addicted now. This teaser trailer does not even come CLOSE to the potential the books have. Don’t let it fool you- check out the books. I guess only after you’ve read the books and you know the characters does this trailer excite you. However, there is so much more, so don’t be fooled by the trailer.
