Monday Morning Box Office Report – May 5, 2008

No, that’s not a mistake… the man in the mechanical suit did indeed break the $100 million barrier over the weekend, on its way to a massive $200 million worldwide debut. I’m sure it didn’t hurt that Iron Man was the first summer blockbuster out of the gates this year, hot on the heels of a pretty weak first quarter, but wow… even I didn’t expect numbers like these for a superhero that’s not exactly one of Marvel’s top liners. Made of Honor, the Patrick Dempsey/Michelle Monaghan romantic comedy pulled in $15 million in leftovers, while Baby Mama dropped to #3 with $10 mil. Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Harold & Kumar 2 rounded out the top 5. I find it hard to believe that Hollywood might actually top last summer’s haul, but if Iron Man is any indication, it could very well happen.

1. Iron Man — $101M
2. Made of Honor — $15.5M
3. Baby Mama — $10.3M
4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall — $6.13M
5. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay — $6.01M
6. The Forbidden Kingdom — $4.2M
7. Nim’s Island — $2.75M
8. Prom Night — $2.5M
9. 21 — $2.1M
10. 88 Minutes — $1.6M

  1. Wow. $101 million. I would have lost that bet. I suppose we’ll be seeing multiple iron man sequels for sure now.

  2. I’m glad that Iron Man has had such a successful launch. Firstly, it means that Marvel Studios were right to finance it on their own and they can now produce more movies. Secondly, it means we will get more Iron Man movies, which can only be a good thing.

  3. Iron Man was waaaaaaaay better than I was expecting. Despite this, I’m still surprised that it did so well. I guess this is one example of advertising going above and beyond the expectations.
