MacGyver: The Movie?
Oh goody. Another cheesy 80’s TV series is apparently on the verge of getting an unironic feature film adaptation… this time around we’re talking about MacGyver! If you can believe it, series creator Lee David Zlotoff dropped the bombshell at the Maker Faire fest in San Mateo, CA this past weekend.
MacGyver has been the butt of jokes for years due to the main character’s ability to create ridiculous gadgets out of everyday objects. Can this actually make for a serious movie? Apparently Zlotoff thinks so. Personally I’m lumping this in with Magnum P.I., Knight Rider, and The A-Team, as TV shows that seem a bit too silly nowadays to play completely straight. I know each of them have their dedicated fans who would disagree with me, but I think I’d prefer a Starsky & Hutch style send up. What do you think… a MacGyver movie? Really? All I’m saying is they better stay true to the original series and maintain the mullet!

In all seriousness, I’m not sure anyone really cares about a MacGyver movie anymore. The appeal of the show WERE the cool gadgets. I’m with you, no one’s going to care.

But really– I would like to see a MacGyver movie if they treated it with some semblance of seriousness– I have a feeling if this one happens, it will be of the Will Ferrell “random = funny” school of just turning on the camera and letting everyone “riff.”

On the other hand, that’s also why I question whether or not it’s even going to happen at this point… it could just be him trying to build hype for something he wants to do.
Posted by Sean on May 5th, 2008I would go see this. That is, if the MacGyver they bring back is the MacGyver from the first couple of seasons: special agent, foreign locales, larger than life situations, main character is humble, smart, but has a certain edge to him.
The MacGyver of the later years so PC that he lost his machismo. Instead of saving the world he lectured the audience. Who wants that?
I’ll watch a clever man in a smart movie. Bring back MacGyver, the original MacGyver.
