Rian Johnson’s The Brothers Bloom Gets a Release Date and Some Photos

One of the movies that I’m really looking forward to in 2008 is Rian Johnson’s second feature film The Brothers Bloom. I was a big fan of his directorial debut Brick, and his next project finds him teaming up with the likes of Adrien Brody, Rachel Weisz, and Mark Ruffalo. Strangely, I had heard very little about the film up until now, and I was beginning to wonder if it had been pushed back to 2009. Not so, according to a short update posted on the movie’s official website. It seems that the flick has finished editing, and will finally be released on October 24th.
The Brothers Bloom is about (obviously) two brothers (Brody and Ruffalo) who are established con men, known for swindling many millionaires in the past. But when they hatch a plot to steal from an eccentric young heiress (Weisz) it appears that they may have met their match. I managed to find a few photos floating around the web, and they look great. Johnson has said that it’s not a period piece, but “it’s very much its own world, if that makes any sense”. Not really, but I’m still all over it. Check out a few more pics after the jump.

Is that the Kill Bill Go-Go Yubari metal ball asian woman? Looks alot like her, but I thought she would never work again after that part. Not because she did a bad job (pretty shitty movie, but what can you do with a script like that?) but I thought she would suffer from a Mark Hammill-style icon status.
Posted by Henrik on April 17th, 2008sweet i’m excited already
Posted by mike on April 17th, 2008Chiaki Kuriyama (aka Gogo Yubari) has been working pretty steady since Kill Bill, just not in North American films. I’m guessing the actress you’re referring to is Rinko Kikuchi, who was in Survive Style 5+ and Funky Forest.
Posted by Steven on April 17th, 2008She is the girl from Babel! Now that makes more sense.
Posted by Henrik on April 17th, 2008Good call. Babel totally slipped my mind.
Posted by Steven on April 17th, 2008Yeah I have no idea what Survive Style 5+ or Funky Forest is. Sounds like some wacky flicks.
Posted by Henrik on April 17th, 2008Rinko has an Oscar Nom even. Nice to see her continue working in western films to augment her growing asian resume.
Survive Style and Funky Forest are both fabulously weird japanese free-form experiments.
she is also doing voice work for Japans animated studio 4C which has but out the edgiest animated features (outside of Mamoru Oshii and Satoshi Kon’s recent features). Try to track down copies of MindGame (although their lesser but still awesome Tekkon Kinkreet is widely availabe in R1). Awesome. Anyway, Rinko is in the upcoming 4C anthology not-so-modestly (but appropriately titled) GENIUS PARTY. Really looking forward to that one actually.
Posted by Kurt on April 17th, 2008And if you are looking for a Chiaki Kuriyama fix, certainly worthwhile is the cult-classic BATTLE ROYALE, but more recently she is great as the over-the-top villain in Takashi Miike’s THE GREAT YOKAI WAR or as the meek heroine in the inspired parody of J-Horror EXTE: HAIR-EXTENSIONS.
Posted by Kurt on April 17th, 2008I’m excited for this based solely on how awesome Brick was. Can’t wait.
Posted by Rian on April 17th, 2008Good pics. I like the rian johnson guy so far.
Posted by Rusty James on April 17th, 2008I enjoyed Brick and Rian Johnson’s direction in that movie was awesome. From looking at these pics, Brothers Bloom will also be visually cool. I’m going to see it for sure.
Posted by Primal on April 17th, 2008“Brick” was good, but it was also incredibly stylized. The pictures from this film also look good, but also very stylized and idiosyncratic. I hope he doesn’t get mired in his own penchant for style (over substance) like perhaps a Wes Anderson.
But, I’m definitely going to check this one out.
