Warner Brothers Drops Michael Dougherty’s Trick R Treat

If you’ve been wondering what happened to the Bryan Singer-produced horror flick Trick R Treat which was supposed to be released last October, you’re not alone. The movie stars Anna Paquin, Dylan Baker and Brian Cox in a collection of intertwining stories that take place on Halloween. It marks the directorial debut for Superman Returns/X2 screenwriter Michael Dougherty, but apparently he has hit a roadblock with the film’s current distributor Warner Brothers.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Warners have officially decided not to release the film themselves, and are now putting it up for sale to the highest bidder. There’s no word on what exactly their objection is, so we can only assume it is too violent and edgy, or maybe they just feel that an R-rated horror movie will not bring a big enough return on their investment at this point. Who knows, maybe the movie simply stinks. Either way, I’m sure Trick R Treat will still find its way to theatres, but depending on the distributor it could be a much more limited release. In the worst case scenario, it could end up going direct to DVD. Were you looking forward to Trick R Treat, and if so, how do you feel about this sudden change of heart at Warner Brothers?

Man, this movie looked badass when I first saw the trailer. I was so pumped to see it last Halloween too. Hopefully it does get released at some point.
Posted by bryan on April 8th, 2008I’m with Bryan. I was really looking forward to seeing it last Halloween and was disappointed when it didn’t open. Hopefully whoever picks it up will hold on to it until later in the year!
Posted by Marina on April 8th, 2008I’ve been wondering what happened to this movie. I’m really excited to check it out. I’d love to hear the actual reason for Warner Brothers’ decision, but as long as it comes out sometime soon I could care less who releases it.
Posted by Rian on April 8th, 2008I’d bet it’s going to eventually come straight to DVD.
Posted by Jon Rocks on April 8th, 2008It looks almost like something Rob Zombie could have done. Looks good nonetheless.
