New To Theatres This Weekend - Apr. 4, 2008

There is a trio of major releases out this weekend, each coming from a different side of the fence. First up we have the new George Clooney flick, Leatherheads, which is a period piece about the football in the 1920’s. Also, a new horror movie based on the best-selling novel The Ruins, and yet another kid’s fantasy film called Nim’s Island (I gave up trying to keep track of them a long time ago). Common sense would dictate that Nim’s Island is the easy box office victor, but George Clooney is an unknown quantity right now, and R-rated horror flicks are typically hit and miss. All 3 are sitting at about 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. In limited release we also have Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones concert doc Shine A Light (which is also playing in IMAX), and Wong Kar Wai’s hotly anticipated My Blueberry Nights (unfortunately it’s only playing in 5 theatres). What are you going to see this weekend?
Leatherheads
The Ruins
Nim’s Island
Meet Bill (limited)
My Blueberry Nights (limited)
Sex and Death 101 (limited)
Shine a Light (limited)
The Flight of the Red Balloon (limited)

When I saw the name Leatherheads, the horror nut in me thought it was some Texas Chainsaw sequel that I hadn’t heard of.
When I found out it’s a football movie, a little part of me died.
Enjoy, Greg.
Posted by Chris on April 4th, 2008I saw The Ruins on opening night. It wasn’t as good as the book, but was surprisingly good. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the ending, but overall it was a good movie.
