Open Forum Friday: How Can We Improve the Film Junk Podcast?

Hey guys, here’s something we’ve been meaning to do for a while now, and since it’s kind of a slow week I thought it might be a good time to bring it up. It’s safe to say that we enjoy doing the Film Junk Podcast every week, and a good number of you seem to enjoy listening. But we’re always thinking about how it can be improved, and how we can get even more people to tune in. With that in mind, we figured it’s about time we asked you, the listeners, for some feedback!
I’ve put together a short survey, and we’d really appreciate your input to figure out what works and what doesn’t, and what kinds of things you’d like to see in the future. Is the podcast too long? Do you want to see more video content? Are there certain segments that interest you more than others? Even if you don’t fill out the survey, feel free to leave suggestions in the comments below. Give us your thoughts here on Open Forum Friday!

When I hit enter to jump a line in the freeform box, it entered my survey. So the only answer you got was to the question “Do you listen to audio podcasts”, the answer was “Yes”.
Posted by Henrik on March 28th, 2008That’s all we need to know!
Posted by Sean on March 28th, 2008Pressed enter too! sorry
Posted by Nemesis on March 28th, 2008The same thing happened to me.
Posted by Aaron on March 28th, 2008Thank god, now I don’t feel like an idiot. Well, not in regards to this anyway!
Posted by Henrik on March 28th, 2008I did the whole thing — it isn’t THAT difficult, guys!
Posted by Stefan on March 28th, 2008I’ve noticed Top 5 has been missing.
this is not a bad thing. the way the podcast has evolved it seems that it was something that wasn’t really cared about so much as treated like a staple. do it when you really want to do it, don’t force it. good choice.
get a soundclip to play, some button with a noise to play everytime jay goes to the bathroom….
Posted by Goon on March 28th, 2008Sound clips effects is good, funny “fake” commercials a la GTA III (which I’ve already suggested to Sean), and MORE advertising of the show…not just on the web, but shirts, promo events, decals on cars, etc. Promote it so people know it exists, but at the same time “be different”….maybe its time to go back to CFBU? Or are only students allowed there?
Posted by Baychuk on March 28th, 2008Keep Reed busy with Cantankerous where he is better suited and away from the Film Junk Podcast, and you’re golden.
Posted by Rian on March 28th, 2008Pressed enter before completing survey as well…
but as far as my favorite features…Jay’s rants are on top, followed by Greg’s HMV stories. I also like when you guys do the Top 5 lists and even if less known, the Film Junk Defense Force. An idea to make us participate in the process, maybe throw in a little poll on 3 movies the Defenser is willing to defend and go with the one with the most votes. Not that it would make much different. As far as length, I tend to like the podcast in the long run so no need to compress here.
Either way, the podcast is my favorite of all film podcasts, and I listen to a lot, so I guess there’s not much to fix.
Oh, and more of Jay singing random things!
Posted by Julien on March 28th, 2008live streaming coverage of Cannes, Berlinale, Sundance, and TIFF
Film Junk Defense Force is great, Top 5 lists tend not to go anywhere.
On slow weeks maybe you can do some kind of Criterion Collection review, randomize your pick and force yourself to see it. could use spine title number as the means to randomizing. I mention this because I am going through the collection, finished the first 100 and I came across some truly amazing films I know I would not have seen otherwise.
Posted by rot on March 28th, 2008I love the singing too. And the top 5 is something I think gives you folks a chance to shine, wether or not you feel that you are in a position to take advantage of it is another matter I guess.
A Jay-Sung theme for pissing/experiencing assholetrauma would be a great feature too.
And give some T-Shirts to fans, that would be nice.
Posted by Henrik on March 28th, 2008I also think the defense force is great.
Posted by Henrik on March 28th, 2008Reading these comments I don’t feel that inadequate anymore… I hit enter too soon too… But not before I got to suggest a segment called “AND NOW: More things Jay thinks are shit!”
Posted by ivan on March 29th, 2008I only got to add 1 click before the survey jumped away.I would like to take it but now it seems I cannot.
Posted by MoriaOrc on March 29th, 2008loved the top 100 movie lists episode.
Posted by adam on March 29th, 2008would like to see more older movies talked about.
I vote stick to new movies, preferably with unfunny commentary, and as many of Greg’s minor league hockey stories as possible.
Be the Freddy Got Fingered of podcasts.
Posted by Matt Gamble on March 29th, 2008Hey guys, I guess there is some weird issue with the plug-in I used to create the survey… obviously a lot of people had problems filling it out. We used it before for the Year End Reader Poll so I’m not sure why it’s an issue now. Either way, thanks for your comments and all the feedback thus far. Much appreciated!
Posted by Sean on March 29th, 2008Just watched a short about a creature from Norway.Looks really well done.Fans of documentaries on cutting edge scientific research should really check it out.
Posted by MoriaOrc on March 29th, 2008While I was listing the other podcasts I listen to I noticed that the text was all on one long line, so I hit enter to start a new line and the survey was sent.
Posted by deadpaul on March 29th, 2008I think you guys should discuss Corner Gas more. That plus I propose that you discuss the greatest Canadian film of all time, Meatballs.
I sang a little ditty about Jay going to the bathroom on one show and told Sean to keep it.
I don’t recall Jay needing to take a piss break in the last couple of shows.
I hope we still have that clip.
Posted by Greg on March 29th, 2008That is right. I remember laughing when Greg took revenge, that clip should be played at proper and inproper moments. And you should also experiment more with the insincere canned laughter! Comedic gold.
Posted by Henrik on March 29th, 2008Canned laughter when used in small doses is comedic gold!
Gotta make this show “fun”!!! Yay fun!
Posted by Baychuk on March 30th, 2008If you pressed enter and it kicked you out, then just erase your FilmJunk cookie(s) and try again.
Posted by Doug on March 30th, 2008Other than the reviews, I also like the FilmJunk Defense Force. The video reviews are always excellent too. I suggest what rot said about coverage of a film festival. Greg made it seem pretty awesome to go to TIFF. Maybe the whole crew can go this year?
Also, are you guys going to do an updated OFC Top 100 year or was that just a fanboy response last year that it is over and done with? I’m not sure if AFI updates it every year, but who cares.
Posted by Primal on March 31st, 2008I have subbmitted twice due to error.
Posted by lani on April 4th, 2008Okay I thought I could do it over but I cannot so heres all the comments I wanted to write but could not:
1. I like listening to old and new reviews so it would be cool if you could do a review for each each week.
2. I find that maybe the podcast is a little long, and would not mind if it was only an hour. But I would not wish this at the cut of content, so figure that one out.
3. The segment I dont like the most is junkmail. People tend to go on too long and take up too much time. Also it maybe because I hate the intro song.
4. I find the layout of the website annoying to navigate. So I dont come here unless something specific is mentioned in the show. But there is lots of good content here, however hard to find.
5. I like the non-movies chat, Jays bitching, Gregs stories, hehe even the hocky talk. Makes the whole show more of an ongoing conversation and feels like I am listening to friends chat (which it is I assume) rathern then a dry movie review podcast.
6. the Cops thing is cool and I enjoy it, sorry I cannot spell his name but the other guy was a great guest. He prob should not be on every show but brining him in once in a while is a good change of pace.

any Librarian who calls themself a Keeper of Knowledge is a dick. I bet he’s from Melbourne. And screw him for giving off such a conceited impression of librarians.
