Michael Cera to Star in Edgar Wright’s Adaptation of Scott Pilgrim’s Little Life Graphic Novel

Up until now, it seems like we’ve been seeing Michael Cera land a lot of very similar roles in movies, all based on his performance as the shy and awkward George Michael on Arrested Development. Obviously with the success of Superbad and Juno, his career is really taking off at this point, but I have been secretly hoping we might see him try something a little bit more adventurous in the near future. It looks like he may have found just the thing. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cera is close to signing on for the lead role in Scott Pilgrim’s Little Life, a movie based on the Oni Press graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Malley.

The graphic novel is about a 23 year old slacker in a rock band who falls in love with a delivery girl, but in order to win her heart finds himself forced to battle her seven evil ex-boyfriends. The graphic novel takes place in Toronto, Canada and references many local landmarks. No word on if the movie itself will be shot in Toronto, but here’s the kicker: Edgar Wright of Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz fame is directing. His flashy, high-energy style of directing should be perfect for a comic book adaptation. This just jumped near the top of my list of most anticipated movies, and it starts shooting sometime in the fall. For more info on the comics, visit ScottPilgrim.com.

  1. I’m eager to see how the adaptation turns out…

I think Cera may be too young, and while he may not be the perfect Scott either, he’s certainly not a bad choice…

I have no idea how they’re gonna cast some of the other people – I don’t know if Ramona should be regular ‘cute’ or a little more intimidating, like that girl with the big eyes who was in 40 Year Old Virgin and Charlie Bartlett…

  2. I have no idea what the graphic novel is about but one thing is for sure, Michael Cera & Edgar Wright is a sell for me right there.

  3. Yikes. Based on what he’s done so far, I can’t see Cera pulling that off. Hopefully he’s got the chops.

  4. I love Cera and I love Wright, but try as I may, I have not been able to get into the Scott Pilgrim comics. Honestly, I’ve never made it through an entire volume of the book, but it’s just not up my alley, I suppose. I’ll definitely see this film based on Cera and Wright though, and if nothing else, maybe it’ll make me interested enough to finally give the comics a serious go. Bring it on.
