Monday Morning Box Office Report – March 17th, 2008

It was a big weekend for the Dr. Seuss adaptation Horton Hears a Who!, pulling in an impressive $45 million (nearly 3 times as much as the next closest competitor, Roland Emmerich’s 10,000 B.C.). No real surprise, considering the lacklustre options out there in multiplexes right now, but even so it was a pretty big success. Never Back Down managed #3 with $8.6 million, followed by College Road Trip with $7.8 mil. Somehow Vantage Point is hanging in the top 5. Meanwhile Neil Marshall’s Doomsday debuted at #7 with just $4.7 million… how long before the Grindhouse comparisons kick in now?

1. Horton Hears a Who! — $45.1M
2. 10,000 B.C. — $16.4M
3. Never Back Down — $8.61M
4. College Road Trip — $7.89M
5. Vantage Point — $5.4M
6. The Bank Job — $4.91M
7. Doomsday — $4.74M
8. Semi-Pro — $2.98M
9. The Other Boleyn Girl — $2.9M
10. The Spiderwick Chronicles — $2.39M

  1. Seriously? More people went to “Never Back Down” and “College Road Trip” than “Doomsday?” What is wrong with people? The Horton thing makes sense as it’s a kid’s film; but I’m shocked VP has held on this long.

I guess movie goers don’t like anything that kicks ass (i.e. Grindhouse, Doomsday).

  2. Nice on Horton. As Dr. Seuss adaptations go, it’s the closes anyone has ever gotten to the Chuck Jones cartoon versions.

This thing is a hair-shy of a masterpiece actually. I was really, really surprised how good HORTON actually is.

    This years Ratatouille? Perhaps.

  3. I saw Funny Games, and liked it alright. It’s good for a change of pace, as I don’t really know any other movie that feels or acts like it. It’s like a joke on the subject of violence.
