David Gordon Green in Talks to Direct Suspiria Remake?

It kind of blows my mind that director David Gordon Green, previously known for critically-acclaimed art house films like George Washington and All The Real Girls is now finding himself at the center of a lot of higher profile projects. As you may have heard, he directed the upcoming Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy Pineapple Express, and now he is apparently involved in a remake of Dario Argento’s classic Italian horror flick Suspiria.

We reported last year that Green had been tapped to write the script with Scott Heim (Mysterious Skin). Now, according to a recent interview with Shock Till You Drop, it looks like he may actually direct as well. Green had this to say about the project:

“These Italian producers came to me about it, wanting to do a pretty amazing, ambitious, artistic (version)… It could be pretty wild.”

It seems he is more into genre films than you might think (I have yet to see his 2004 thriller Undertow), and would like to do more in the future. “I’d also like to start a straight-to-video action company that just does genre movies… Give me a couple million bucks to go explore some schlock. I’d like to be the next Roger Corman. He would have his hand in freakin’ Piranha but also in Fellini. I like that idea. I would love to do some genre stuff but also some crazy intimate, no-budget movies.”

Wow. It sounds like David Gordon Green wants to try a lot of different things with his career, and I can’t wait to see what he does next. Whether or not a Suspiria remake is worthwhile still remains to be seen.

  1. Didn’t Lucky McKee already ‘remake’ Susperia recently with THE WOODS?

Count me out. Susperia was so of its time and place that a remake is totally pointless.

  2. I agree. I don’t know what more they could do with this film to make it worth remaking. I wish people would just go and watch the older films that are being remade, instead of this mentality of “Why watch the old one, when Rob Zombie’s probably going to do it better?” Now, I’m not comparing David Gordon Green to Zombie, but you can see what I’m getting at. I’d be much more interested in DG Green coming up with an original horror film. Having said all of this– I’d see his “Suspiria” remake in a heartbeat. Ain’t hypocrisy grand?

  3. What the hell? I draw the fucking line at Suspiria, sorry.

“These Italian producers came to me about it, wanting to do a pretty amazing, ambitious, artistic (version)… It could be pretty wild.”

Yeah, cos the original is completely pedestrian, boring, dull, safe, and not interesting or influential at all.

Oh this seriously grinds my fucking gears. I wish I hadn’t even read this. GRRRRRR

That’s a good point, Less Lee. Funny!
