Harry Potter fans are a weird bunch. Although you might not think of them on the same level as, say, Firefly, Star Wars and Star Trek fans, the truth is, there’s a whole world of extreme Potter fandom out there that many of us aren’t aware of. There are Harry Potter-themed bands (Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys), fan fiction writers, artists, podcasters and many other people paying tribute to J.K. Rowling’s work in extraordinary ways.

We Are Wizards is a new documentary directed by Josh Koury that delves into this magical subculture. It seems to focus mostly on the bands and the musical genre that has now been dubbed “Wizard Rock”. Although I can’t see this being nearly as interesting as Trekkies (the fan culture documentary by which all others must be judged) I have to admit that I am somewhat curious. (If anyone has seen Jeff Krulik’s Harry Potter Parking Lot, you know there are probably some good laughs to be had.) We Are Wizards premieres next week at the SXSW Film Festival.
