Tarsem Singh’s The Fall Trailer
Last week when I was writing my review of Nightmare Detective, I mentioned that the movie was a little bit reminiscent of The Cell. This got me wondering why we haven’t heard more from The Cell’s director Tarsem Singh (aka “Tarsem” with no last name, thank you very much). Although The Cell was not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, the surreal imagery found inside the mind of the serial killer was certainly the main reason to see it, and should have made one heck of a calling card for an up and coming filmmaker. It turns out his latest film, The Fall, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2006, and it is only now about to get a true theatrical release this April.
I don’t know what the reason is for the long delay, but a new trailer has just turned up online over at IGN, and it says the movie is now presented by Spike Jonze and David Fincher. Does this mean they put up some money to officially release the movie themselves, or did they just convince a studio to do it? Either way, those are two huge names to have supporting your film. It certainly looks every bit as visually astonishing as The Cell was, although I can’t say if the story will be intelligible or not. It seems like a Pan’s Labyrinth type of fairy tale, with a man telling this fantastical story to a young girl in the hospital.

Hey, this looks like it could be pretty good. Some of the imagery is a bit reminiscent of Alejandro Jodorowsky… less gritty, of course. I’d say I’m interested.
Apparently it’s based off a 1981 film from Bulgaria called “Yo Ho Ho”, of which I can find very little info on. Anyone familiar with it?

The storyline is secondary to the mind blowing visuals, as in The Cell, but still an interesting storyline with similarities to Pan’s Labyrinth. Young Catinca Untaru is quite amazing. Would be very curious to find out why the long delay for release…
