I'm glad No Country for Old Men swept the ceremony. That's the only movie I was rooting for, also bein the only candidate I'd watched.

Would've loved to drop in on the chat but decided to go see Be Kind, Rewind instead. Looking forward to your review on the podcast!

Sorry Henrik, people kept dropping in and out of the chat, it was impossible to keep a copy of it. Plus I don't think it would be very interesting to read after the fact.

I think I did say in our review on the podcast that I felt Juno was real to the extent that Juno's blase attitude about everything that was happening to her is pretty representative of a lot of teens nowadays. True, she was pretty damn quick on the draw, and making jokes about things that were way before her time, but just the general cynicism felt authentic to me. Also the Jason Bateman/Jennifer Garner characters had elements of believability to them for me as well.

And the fact that she wore million dollar shoes does not make me any more or less a fan of Diablo Cody.

I just wanted to add yet again I gained so much respect for Tilda Swinton tonight. she already had it, but man... from not giving a crap about clothes, hair, makeup, and that speech... she's just plain cool to me.

"It’s a movie, not real life."

with dialogue and just about anything else, suspension of disbelief is relative to the world the director creates, and Reitman simply doesn't acheive it, which makes all of this stand out so much.

As for all the characters sounding the same, no they dont all spit dialogue rapid fire in the same way, but they ALL put jokes above any actual emotion. Juno is ALWAYS on, even to the point of a double joke Thundercats/Thunderbirds reference while having her water break... talking like a jackass while meeting Bateman and Garner for the first time, the parents are cracking jokes the second she leaves the room after telling them she's pregnant, I mean jesus christ, is everyone a stand up comedian? Even her dumbass friend is quick on the ball with the references. In the end, not only does it fail to ring true in its own contextual world, Cody makes me HATE these people, and can only deliver an emotional moment for Juno by forcing her to break down and cry, a segment convenient to the script out of the blue from everything built up - this wasn't Juno's tough facade breaking, it was simply a lazy 180 from someone too talentless to properly set someone up for a fall.

I find it weird to hear defences acknowledging that the dialogue is weird and unrealistic and 'just a movie' now, when the majority of the pre release buzz was so highly based on it being 'real' and 'honest' - even during the Oscar pre-show there was Ellen Page explaining that THIS is what connected it to people, and for the love of christ I can't see how the hell people could soak anything real out of that fraud of a script. screw her and the million dollar shoes (thats right) she walked in on.

I think Transformers obviously got penalized for obstucting the FX shots with michael bay-esque editing. The Academy probably figured they were covering for sub-par effects.

It's kind of regrettable because the FX team probably was pretty talented. But the film itself is barely watchable.

Great picture guys.

I didn't want to miss the live convo, but I also didn't feel like watching the ceremonies. Instead I played some PS3 and watched We Own The Night and caught up on the winners right here in about 30 seconds.

The only major surprise I saw was that Transformers didn't win for effects. I also wasn't necessarily expecting Juno to win for screenplay, but it doesn't really bother me either. I was happy to see No Country, the Coen brothers, and Javier Bardem all represent, and the one thing I honestly wish I'd have watched the show for is Bardem's acceptance speech. But then again, that's what YouTube's for.

Yes the film did 'click in' at some point and I became less annoyed with the writing. However the sins of the first half hour I can't forgive and should have precluded an Academy Award.
