Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D Trailer Starring Brendan Fraser

I still have yet to experience one of these newfangled digital 3D movies myself, but a lot of people had good things to say about seeing Beowulf in 3D, and I have to admit that I’m intrigued by the possibilities. There are those who would have us believe that this new technology is, in fact, the future of the movie industry, but I think before that happens, someone will have to prove that digital 3D can be used for something more than a glorified amusement park ride. Which, incidentally, is exactly what the new Brendan Fraser movie, Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, looks like.

The movie is a retelling of the classic Jules Verne story, this time with a geologist (Brendan Fraser) and his nephew (Josh Hutcherson) discovering a secret message in an ancient artifact that leads them down a crater and into a fantastical underground world. I believe this is being billed as the first movie created entirely in Digital 3D, which means that it won’t be released in any format other than in 3D. And really, I don’t think there would be any point to seeing it otherwise. I mean, there’s literally a rollercoaster ride right in the movie for pete’s sake! I might check this out just because it does look like the ultimate showcase of what the new technology is capable of, but I can only assume that the story and characters will be sacrificed as a result. In a way it’s kind of unfortunate because I think a more faithful adaptation of this book could be really cool. (Indie director Paul Chart was initially supposed to direct a straightforward remake, but he left the project when they decided to go 3D. He was replaced by special effects expert Eric Brevig.)

A non-3D trailer for the movie has just arrived online, so if you’re curious as to what it will be like, just click to watch the video below. I think I can already guess where all the little 3D camera tricks will be inserted. What do you think, will this be worth checking out? Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D hits theatres on July 11th.

  1. This looks like a movie I would have loved when I was eight years old along with films like Jumanji. Unfortunately, something tells me that even with the 3D aspect of this movie it will only really do anything for children. I would be interested in seeing it just for the 3D though. Then again, I haven’t taken the time to check out any of the other 3D films that have been out thus far.

  2. It looks way better than that dead-eyes beowulf… although yeah, I agree it’ll probably only really work for kids

  3. I really hope that 3D isn’t the way the movie industry is going as a whole. It’s a fun novelty once in a while, but I don’t want all my films that way. I’d probably actually stop going to the cinema if that was the case. Then my life would be over.

Said that, I’ve heard the U2 Live Concert in 3D is really good and wanna check it out.

  4. learn to appreciate 3D films.

  5. So a few of the lines are pretty lame (”We’re still falling!” and “We’re sort of on a fishing trip”) but otherwise, it looks like fun (plus Brendan Fraser is always an attraction for me) and like Ivan said, “It looks way better than that dead-eyes beowulf”.

  6. You know, no matter how awesome this movie could be, it will never beat the fun of watching a cranky James Mason fight giant lizards in the 1958 version.

  7. The 3D in the trailer looked very promising, time will tell if the film is any good.
