Dale Earnhardt Biopic Coming Soon

NASCAR is absolutely huge in the U.S., and after a few recent movies have successfully capitalized on that audience (Talladega Nights, Cars), it looks like another, more serious NASCAR movie is moving to the starting line and revving its engine. Producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher (Jarhead, Memoirs of a Geisha) are currently putting together a biopic based on the life story of racing legend Dale Earnhardt. Both Earnhardt’s widow and his son are supporting the film, which will, one would assume, detail his rise to fame in addition to his tragic death.

There’s not much else to report at this point in terms of a director or a cast, but there’s little doubt that this could be an absolutely massive cash cow with the right people involved. Personally I have little interest in the flick, but there is one name that could possibly get me to see it: Tony Scott baby! Come on, who wouldn’t want to see another Days of Thunder, this time based on a true story?

  1. There was a documentary of some kind about Earnhardt that played in one theater near my home (in Maryland), and from what I can tell, it didn’t perform very well. I’m sure that a film with some real actors, a budget, and some proper marketing will sell though. Not to me, of course. My interest in films about sports is fairly limited (Cool Runnings, baby!).

  2. Gary Oldman???
