[...] I always find it fascinating to watch Hollywood moguls race to complete what for most of us appear to be seemingly identical films. You will of course remember the Antz vs. Bugs Life showdown, or Armageddon vs. Deep Impact. Well, as you may have read in Variety (here), a similar battle appears to be in the works for two competing films about the life of Pablo Escobar. Joe Carnahan (who made Narc, but also Smokin Aces) is in one corner with no less than Christian Bale and Javier Bardem, and in the other corner is Oliver Stone who is the producing the film with Antoine Fuqua attached to direct, and — as was recently announced — starring Edgar Ramirez, a Venezuelan actor who you may remember from The Bourne Ultimatum, Domino and the recent Vantage Point. Not a shabby career for a relatively unknown guy, eh? Plus he’s in two upcoming films from Steven Soderbergh. And a couple weeks ago it was announced that he had been cast as Pablo Escobar himself in Fuqua’s upcoming film (as reported in Cinematical, and Film Junk). [...]
