Bo Zenga to Direct Monster Movie Spoof Stan Helsing

Someone please make the hurting stop. Another spoof movie has just been greenlit, and it comes to us courtesy of Bo Zenga (aka the writer of Soul Plane and producer of Scary Movie). Zenga will make his directorial debut with a movie called Stan Helsing, about a video store clerk who must reluctantly do battle with six of the biggest monsters in movie history on Halloween night. Just in case you didn’t get the joke… the guy’s name is Stan Helsing instead of Van Helsing. Ha! The movie hasn’t even been made yet and I’m already laughing.
In all seriousness, I hate to pre-judge movies like this, but is there any chance in hell this will actually be funny? I can’t even seeing it doing all that well commercially, considering that it doesn’t have Britney Spears references (as far as I know) and it relies on knowledge of older movies that the teen audiences won’t be that familiar with. Unless they decide to make it a direct parody of Stephen Sommers’ Van Helsing, which is essentially a parody in and of itself. The other problem is that I feel like I’ve seen this movie a few too many times before. The Monster Squad, Bubba Ho-Tep and Young Frankenstein are all movies that have dealt with similar material, and I suspect they will all be far superior to this. Stan Helsing starts production in April.

Posted by Kurt on February 11th, 2008I am not generally a fan of parody/spoof films by any stretch of the imagination, but if Stan Helsing, as you suggest, doesn’t include pop culture references to Britney Spears, etc, there is actually a shadow of a doubt that this movie could be good. I don’t expect it to be, but avoiding cheap stabs at current news events is one step closer to comedic quality in my opinion.
