Monday Morning Box Office Report – Feb. 4, 2008

Well, I certainly didn’t see this one coming. #1 at the box office this week was the Hannah Montana 3D concert tour, if you can believe it. The movie played on less than 700 screens and still pulled in $29 million! I’ll never understand some of the fast-moving trends that catch on for kids entertainment… I just found out who she was only a few short weeks ago. The movie broke a record for the biggest opening over the Super Bowl weekend, although part of that was due to the slightly inflated price of admission. Meanwhile, The Eye brought in $13 million in its opening weekend to claim the #2 spot. Movies like Rambo and Cloverfield are proving to have very little staying power, as their ticket sales continue to plummet, meanwhile 27 Dresses, Juno and Meet the Spartans remained in the top 5. P.T. Anderson’s There Will Be Blood took in $4.76 million in its first weekend of wide release.
1. Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour — $29M
2. The Eye — $13M
3. 27 Dresses — $8.4M
4. Juno — $7.45M
5. Meet the Spartans — $7.12M
6. Rambo — $7M
7. The Bucket List — $6.85M
8. Untraceable — $5.4M
9. Cloverfield — $4.9M
10. There Will Be Blood — $4.76M

This is something that has always baffled me. Why does box-office receipt matter in the slightest? The numbers should be based on ticket sales. How many tickets were sold to each of these films?
Because of inflation and differing ticket prices, no one ever knows what the true record holders are on movies. We would though, if they kept track of tickets sold instead of dollars earned.
Posted by Andrew James on February 4th, 2008Yeah, I agree. I suspect they always want to use the actual dollar amount just so they can brag whenever they break a record, which we know is going to keep happening eventually anyway due to inflation.
Posted by Sean on February 4th, 2008$29 million! Did Tyler Perry direct it or something?
Posted by Rusty James on February 4th, 2008When is the last time a concert film opened at no. 1? It would be cool if they released more concert films, although ultimately, I doubt it would come here anyway.
Posted by Henrik on February 4th, 2008I can’t believe Juno is still holding it’s ground so well. I know that most people seem to love it, but it’s been what, six weeks?
