Jason Statham to Star in Namor Movie or… The Crow Remake?

It just wouldn’t be a decent week here at Film Junk without some wild rumours to dissect, and this week the folks over at IESB picked up some pretty far out scoops from a recent interview with The Bank Job star Jason Statham. After being asked whether he’d be interested in starring in any comic book movies, Statham responded with this:
“It’s funny, I took a meeting for Sub-Mariner. I don’t know if I’d look right running around in a tight speedo with wings on my ankles but there’s so many cool fucking characters… I’m trying to think of what would be a good comic book character for me to play. You know, there’s talk of them redoing The Crow. That was a good movie with Brandon Lee, although that was years ago. So if that one comes my way, bang!”
The Namor thing seems rather odd considering he looks nothing like the character, however, it is interesting to note that before Statham was an actor, he was a competitive diver, and a member of Britain’s National Diving Squad for 12 years. (Then again, I thought that’s what stuntmen were for.) As for The Crow remake that he is hinting at… WTF?! That one certainly comes from out of left field, but I suppose since they’ve run that franchise into the ground with direct to video sequels like The Crow: Wicked Prayer, the series is ripe for a reboot. I am assuming he was just kidding about being interested in this project personally. I mean, he doesn’t think he’d look right running around in a speedo, but he has no problem donning full-on goth make-up? Now that would be worth the price of admission.

I for one have been looking forward to a Namor film my entire life! This is what marvel should have started with on the big screen, not spider-man, x_men, fantastic four or any of that other crap.
Posted by fizzle on January 24th, 2008The Crow? Statham? I just can’t see that.
Posted by Marina on January 24th, 2008I just don’t see the need to remake The Crow. You can only screw it up. The emotional baggage attached to the first film, from James O’Barr’s tragic comic foundation to the death of Brandon Lee, was part of what made the piece unique and good. The sequels have progressively degraded the franchise. Brandon Lee was not a huge star when he made The Crow. Adding one to a remake will not make it good. The one-time chemistry that produced the original needs to be left to the fans who love the property and still watch the original on DVD (like me). I, personally, have even less interest in seeing a remake than I have in seeing the sequels. I saw City of Angels, and it was awful. You know that’s what they would do to a remake of the original (which all of the sequels basically were anyway). Hollywood … for once in your miserable existence, don’t try to cash in on this one … just leave it alone.
Posted by GMAC on January 24th, 2008I remember that after watching and hating the first Fantastic Four film I said I’d be willing to see the sequel if it had Galactus. Cut to last night, I watched Rise of the Silver Surfer and hated it, but I can’t help but be interested in seeing a third film if it were to have Namor in it. A solo Sub-Mariner movie doesn’t really interest me, but even though I’m sure a third FF movie would suck as bad as the first two, I’d like to see a recreation of the classic Namor/Human Torch battle (even though it wasn’t the Human Torch from the movies) and the story line in which Namor tries to steal the Invisible Woman away from Mr. Fantastic. As for Jason Statham? Give him the haircut and try to hide the accent a bit and I could see it working.
Posted by Rian on January 24th, 2008I could see him as Namor, though hes not one of my favourite comic book characters. But dont remake the Crow!Has everyone been taking crazy pills!Theres no need to remake The Crow because its perfect, the sequels were really not good and GMAC is right, for once Hollywood…just leave it alone!
Back to Namor, yeah, a cheeky cockney accent would not suit the sub-mariner!
Posted by Marney on January 26th, 2008I agree with Marina. Jason Statham’s a great actor and all, but the gothic apparel just doesn’t seem to fit with his features. Put Mark Dacascos back in instead. He’s perfect for that part. He’s got the looks AND the fighting skills for it. Please, just think about it.
