Bond 22 is Quantum of Solace

The next James Bond movie is easily one of the most highly anticipated blockbusters of 2008, but up until now, there hasn’t really been much to talk about. With the story being kept under wraps, everyone has been referring to it simply as “Bond 22″. This week at a press conference the title of the next flick was finally unveiled. It will be… Quantum of Solace.
Okay, so that’s a pretty weird title (certainly no weirder than Octopussy, mind you) but it turns out it’s also the name of a short story found in the Ian Fleming anthology For Your Eyes Only. Strangely, a synopsis of the story on Wikipedia indicates that it’s “not a spy story” and also that it “does not include action elements”. Sounds like a weird choice to adapt to the big screen, however, co-producer Barbara Broccoli claims that the movie “has lots of action but it also deals with the inner turmoil Bond is feeling”, so perhaps it has no relation to the short story whatsoever.
Marc Forster (Stranger Than Fiction, Finding Neverland) is directing the new movie, with Mathieu Amalric (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Munich) playing the villain and Olga Kurylenko (Hitman) playing Bond’s love interest. Quantum of Solace hits theatres on November 7th.

Nice title, I like it.
Posted by Grammaton Cleric on January 24th, 2008This smells alot like “The Phantom Menace”.
Posted by Henrik on January 24th, 2008Haha yeah I thought of The Phantom Menace right away too. But I kind of like the fact that Bond movies can get away with a lot of weirdness.
Posted by Sean on January 24th, 2008Didn’t they have a woman called like “Pussy Galore” or something like that? That would be cool if they went back to ridiculousness like that, but can you imagine the outcry if a female lead was called Pussy Galore today? Oh man, it would be like a sandstorm in vaginas across the nations.
Posted by Henrik on January 24th, 2008I don’t know, they still have some pretty sexist stuff in the recent movies. Don’t forget Denise Richards’ character in The World is Not Enough was named Christmas Jones, leading to the brilliant one-liner, “I thought Christmas only comes once a year!”
Posted by Sean on January 24th, 2008Haha I have to check that one out!
Posted by Henrik on January 24th, 2008If Hollywood can turn Philip K. Dick’s short story “The Golden Man” into the action-packed (piece of shit) extravaganza that is Lee Tamahori’s “Next”, I have no doubt that they could take a bond story with no spy or action elements and turn it into a roller coaster thrill ride. That isn’t saying that they should, but I certainly believe it could happen.
Posted by Rian on January 24th, 2008I like the new title. If you think about it it could relate back to events in Casino Royale. There are plenty of rumours going around that the new film will pick up the story where the last film finished up and this title would lead me to believe it is true.
