Mysterious Whispers and Other Easter Eggs in Cloverfield

cloverfieldwhispers.jpg

One of the big complaints that some people had about Cloverfield was the fact that it doesn’t really answer all of your questions. Quite the opposite, in fact… it goes out of its way to create new ones. While I can understand how this is frustrating for some viewers who feel the need to know absolutely everything that goes on, this is precisely why the movie made $40 million. Here’s the kicker: the movie itself also has some interesting easter eggs hidden within, some of which certainly hint toward the possibility of a sequel. After the jump, find out a couple things you might have missed the first time you saw Cloverfield (caution: spoilers ahead!)

The folks over at Bloody Disgusting have brought to light one interesting detail about the final scene of the film. Apparently, when Beth and Rob are on the ferris wheel at Coney Island, if you look closely when the camera pans over to the ocean, at the far right of the screen something falls into the water. There is some debate over what exactly that might be, but it certainly is no accident. Some people claim it is the monster itself, falling from outer space. Others claim that this is a tie-in to the viral marketing, which states that a Taragutu satellite fell from orbit and awoke the monster, which had been slumbering at the bottom of the ocean for thousands of years.

The other easter egg that hardcore Cloverfield fans are obsessing over right now is a mysterious sound that is heard after the song in the end credits. It sounds like radio static, but apparently it contains a backwards message that says (are you ready?) “It’s still alive”. They have an MP3 of the deciphered sound over at io9, and you can definitely hear it. I guess that sequel is pretty much money in the bank at this point, right?

While I’m sure some people are already sick of hearing about Cloverfield, this is just another brilliant way they’ve managed to keep people talking about the movie after the fact (and also encourage repeat viewings). If a Cloverfield sequel does indeed happen, you can bet I will be there on opening night. In the meantime… are they any other easter eggs we missed?

  1. I’ve heard about the splash in the ocean, but didn’t notice it myself in the film and am waiting for a clip of it to find it’s way online. I did hear the backwards message however, but instead of insinuating that a sequel is coming, I like to simply consider that short line of backwards dialogue the sequel. It would seem that the point of Cloverfield was to not know and see everything about the situation, so I just like to enjoy imagining where the monster came from and what happened after “operation hammer down” or whatever it was called. Letting my imagination work out the scenarios is much more pleasing than I’m sure a sequel would be and when all is said and done, I just like not knowing.

  2. Did you also notice a DHARMA logo on the screen when they show the color bars in the beginning? What’s up with that?

  3. I like the fact that people are obsessing and picking over every aspect of the film and even though I don’t feel inclined to spend every waking moment deciphering the clues for myself, it’s been fun to follow some of this stuff now that I’ve seen the movie.

At some point, folks are going to get tired of this right?

  4. I like that form of audience participation. That’s why I like LOST. BTW, I linked to your review.

  5. i just wanted to say i noticed that when the movie begins it was 6:42 am and when the bombs explode on beth and rob at the end it was 6:42 am any ideas?

  6. I’m surprised no one has mentioned an easter egg I spotted.

The camera man’s name is Hud. Hud is also a acronym.

    Heads Up Display

  7. Does anyone else think that a shadow looks like a bear (possibly a polar bear, nod to LOST) after one of the characters has been diagnosed with “a bite”?

  8. Why is there another Greg posting stuff? There should be rules for this! Maybe I’ll start posting as Reed.

  9. In Response To Greg – I thought this but after watching the film for a second time this is just the shadow of the two people that take her away, even though it is very convincing that it looks like a bear.

  10. That was interesting with the 6:42 time thing maybe it’s something like the number 23? No? Just me? Well if there is a sequel, I’m camping out Episode I style!

  11. Nobody seems to be mentioning the fact that at the very start the “government” text says footage from multiple sd cards – is this suggesting that hud changed sd cards? (doubtful) more likely that there may very well be a sequel filmed by somebody else within the city?

  12. having reviewed the start of the film again i retract my previous statement.

  13. In one of the scenes, i think it was when they get back into the street from the subway, there is a barrel of toxic waste in the background… am i othe only one that noticed this?

  14. Im starting to think that maybe there is a conection between LOST and Cloverfield, like maybe cloverfield reveals something that is needed in LOST, or the other way around. But i definately want to look further into this.

  15. you can watch the movie online if you need to see it again ovguide.com

  16. Did anyone notice the fact that there is a little symbol that looks like a six and a sword going through it? It appears on the sticker on the cover of the DVD and it also is on the “slusho website” which was code for the name of the monster.

  17. if u want your monster questions somewhat answered get the dvd and go to the scene selections menu then go to the last cluster of scenes i think it is 13-16 and let it sit for a few mins after a few min a sub group 17 will apper this has some extra fotage and other thing including a slusho comercial

  18. First I have to say, I LOVE This Movie, I’m being a bit of a dork on this one, lol.

I’m not completely sure what I think about that splash, I kinda think maybe they just put that in there to create some confusion, because it wouldn’t make much sense for it to be a meteor or a satalite. But thats just what I think.(at this time)

I Hope they do make a sequel, and I’ll be there episode 1 style as well.

I’m getting ready to go check out that sub group 17 right now.

P.S. Is anyone else anoyed that there are like 4 different DVD exclusives out there? (just bought the borders exclusive)

  19. I thought the movie rocked. Whoever figured that sub group out was genius. Anyways I’m sure most of you already know this but was surprised it hasn’t been mentioned in this forum. If you slow down the movie and go frame by frame right when the copper crashes (on impact) you’ll find an old King Kong frame.

  20. OK So I checked out the sub group 17, and though it was cool, I can’t help but think there is more there. You can’t select all of the files that show up, and the same is so on the slusho comercial, there are 8 buttons but only one is clickable. I don’t know, maybe it’s nothing, but when I get more time, I’m gunna play around with it and see if theres anything more, I’m also gunna check out that King Kong clip. (I didn’t know about it)

  21. Wow. the 17th one actually worked. Kudos to those who found it. I just watched all the ‘Supplemental Files’ and now im just more confused than ever. ps. LMAO at the hate dance. now my idea is that it came from the ocean trench in the atlantic, awoken by the drilling? or perhaps made by the Tagruato (or whatever it is) company?? I’m just more confused. Definately going to play around with them. Thanks for it all guys! Listen to them!

  22. Another way to access hidden content, at least on my DVD player, is to go to special features | previews, and hit the previous button one or more times. This lets you access the hidden content one item at a time, starting with the last item. If you go back too far, you’ll end up in the regular DVD special feature content.

I think some of the items I found were not in any of the menus.

  23. The splash at the ocean is definitly visible, try to put your player into slow motion while viewing the water and look at the far right. I believe it is a sateliite, as a debate about the monster being a mother is going arround. And yes, i saw the ending of the film its still alive sequence and the hidden monsters. Im still finding more clues to the monster and its species, probably all hidden in the film.
    Keep Looking!

  24. Has anyone noticed the similarities between the monster and the scarab out of halo?? massive long shot, but they do hav a very similar build, obviously scarab mechanical, n this creature is obviously a living thing

amazing movie, and im well into this easter egg hunting malarkey coz of this film, but got a few things which i aint happy with

    1) the creature suddenly downsizes when he eats hud (heads up display) in half, unless the creature that eats him is a 2nd one

    2) im pretty impressed in how the soldiers were charging at the mahusssive!!! thing… tanks and bombs obviously is what is needed for summit that size, not a fucking m15!!! what they trying to do, tickle it to death

3)anyone else notice how many cars were off the roads and parked up?? srry but new york is not like that at all!!! its complete and utter traffic

4)srry but the thing lasted what 7 hours, i think thts utter crap, it just wouldnt happen!!! at least godzilla hid!!! it just seemed to be wandering about aimlessley for the whole film, apart from when it went in the river just to take out the bridge, then it was back to walking around aimlessly through the city

    5) No fucking way would a building be able to support another building leaning on it, the pair would collapse or at least one of them would!!!

    6) no matter how much you love someone, if there is a big fuck off thing in the way…. u go around!!!!! not head straight for it, n hope u dnt get crushed, and to make things worse, american soldiers stay true to the reputation, and start firing from 10 metres behind you, and if you get shot, its just a bit of friendly fire, where was the heads up to get you to move out the way for them, rude bastards!!!!

    7) although hud seemed to be shitting himself 4 pretty much the whole film, he fucking loved it!!! and probs thort it was cooler than armegeddon!!

All in all a top film, had me on edge, and lots of hidden story to it, just had a few niggles about it, wud love a sequel though, just hope they dnt ruin it

  25. What about the beheading of the statue of liberty, then the U.S. flag falling during the bridge scene? I believe there are a few more things similar to these. Maybe the monster is a representation of terrorism, and the state of our country as a result of this. Just a thought.

  26. I absolutely loved the movie, but didn’t notice any of these little eggs while watching. I’ll have to give the movie a more involved view

  27. yeah I saw the “poison” barrell in the allyway. Did you also notice the “frame” of a drawing of an old kingkong poster near the end? Nice.

  28. In the extra clips of the blonde girl, when she opens the box, the voice on the tape says something like “six, six times”. Whats that all about? Some password or way in to something else?

  29. What about the conversations going on during the party not the one that HUD was having but the ones in the background I’ve heard some stuff is said in these conversations about the monster

  30. “Abrams also confirms that there is absolutely no connection between LOST and Cloverfield, as he called the use of the Dharma logo a wink to his friends working on the popular sci-fi television series.”

I was a little excited about the possible connection…but there it is!! I can’t wait for the sequel though.

The quote and more comments about the sequel are from http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/04/26/jj-abrams-on-a-cloverfield-sequel/

  31. has anyone else noticed the 12 videos of some blonde girl talking to the camera?
i havent watched them all i just found them but theyre really weird!
she says theres an answer to ’six, six times’ and whispers something but i can’t mnake it out!

  32. to coulson, the six, six times is a nod to slusho, as the strap line is you can’t drink just six.
elsewhere on the web, i heard about the blonde girl eating some fungal stuff that the tarouga corp have been harvesting from the chuai platform. that is the oil rig which is attacked in the viral footage.

  33. In the scene where the helicopter crashes near the end of the film, once it hits the ground the images cut to a few frames of beth pulling on rob’s arm, then a couple of seconds of inside the helicopter then a couple of frames of a still image from the 1933 King Kong, where you see kong on the empire state building reaching out towards a bi-plane

  34. What I dont get is why would the monster leave the city to go to the safety of the river and attack the bridge, then return to the hostile city it just escaped from? To me, that doesnt make sense. You go someplace get beat on, leave, then return to the same place? My conclusion is that where two, the baby left, but the mother came looking for him. I know its been disputed, but the monster at the end doesnt seem as big as the monster in the city. My theory, the satellite woke up the baby, the mother sensed this. The baby wakes up to bright lights, and as everyone knows babyies love shiny things, i.e. New York. Baby went to investigate, got scared, ran for the river where it met with mama. Mother saw how her baby was hurt and decided to decimate the threat towards her baby. Classic maternal instinct.

  35. About the king kong clip, there is this guy on youtube who found more than just king kong picture clips through out the movie. And as for the multiple sd cards, that will be featured in the sequel, on the bridge scene, HUD will look around and for a sec you will notice another guy with a Camera and they both face each other but then quickly look away. But that’s what I heard.
