The Movie Club Podcast #4: Lady in the Water and Funny Games

movieclub4.jpgIt’s time for this month’s episode of The Movie Club Podcast, our collaborative roundtable panel discussion with the good folks from Row Three! In episode #4, we analyze M. Night Shyamalan’s highly criticized Lady in the Water, and also take on Michael Haneke’s dark thriller Funny Games (the U.S. remake is due in theatres in March).

Head on over to the Movie Club Podcast website to listen to the show, and feel free to leave your feedback in the comments there. Next month’s episode will feature discussions on Cannibal Holocaust and Freddy Got Fingered. Why are we subjecting ourselves to movies like this? All in the name of education and enlightenment my friends! A poll for the next month’s episode will be available on the site sometime this weekend so that you can vote on movies for episode #6.

FGF… oh man I’d love to get in on that one.

FGF… What a waste of opportunity. I’m sure it has stuff that gets un-noticed (the thing most people seem to bring up is the thrown Freud statue… as if that makes the movie a masterpiece) but seriously, there are SO many movies to delve into, that not only will make you interested about filmmaking, but also entertain you. Nosferatu? Metropolis? Bronenosets Potemkin? Chronique d’un ete? Cries and whispers (might be a bit rough, I mean I know CH has some gruesome stuff, but reality bites)?

All of these are real films, way more worthy of attention than Freddy Got Fingered. To me at least. I guess I should do my own Movie Club podcast, and pay for getting it uploaded and making it downloadable…

dude, you are comparing apples and oranges. Freddy Got Fingered is bizarre comedy and you bring up Metropolis. jesus. The appropriate snob retort would be to go rent Annie Hall or something.

Pulling this “real film, way more worthy of attention than Freddy Got Fingered”, is a pretty obnoxious.

I mean fucking christ, you loved TMNT, how’d you like it if I simply replied to your enjoyment of it by saying “Plebian, why didnt you watch 8 1/2 instead”

For the record though, Green’s intentions though have been often compared to Un Chien Andelou :P

“(the thing most people seem to bring up is the thrown Freud statue… as if that makes the movie a masterpiece)”
strawman argument. You act as if thats the crux of anyones defense of FGF, when its just one drop in a sea of absurd anti-comedy punk moments.

It’s simple, just don’t listen to the episode.

Well I wasn’t trying to prove anything. My ‘argument’ is simply an observation.

It’s good though… Obviously you are free to choose whatever movies you prefer, as it should be. I might continue the futile complaints.

The reason I brought up all the other movies, is that these are fantastic pieces of filmmaking, and movies like that are missing from discussions on the internet… Cannibal Holocaust and FGF are alittle more down the beaten path, which I think is a shame, but hey – you never know what might happen in the future right?
