Who Will Joseph Gordon-Levitt Play in G.I. Joe?

When we reported last week that Marlon Wayans had been cast as Ripcord in Stephen Sommers’ G.I. Joe movie, there was also an accompanying announcement that the talented Joseph Gordon-Levitt was in negotations for another unspecified part. At the time it seemed a bit strange to me that they wouldn’t reveal which character he might play, but now I think I see why they may have been trying to keep it on the down low: to reveal the nature of his role would be to enter into spoiler territory.

However, since I have no problems with spoiling G.I. Joe for myself (and since other people are already reporting this as well), I thought I would give you guys the scoop (which is admittedly unconfirmed at this point). SPOILER WARNING! STOP READING NOW IF YOU DON’T WANT TO LEARN ABOUT A MAJOR PLOT POINT IN THE MOVIE.

Okay, now that those freaks are gone, here’s the deal: According to CHUD, Gordon-Levitt will play Duke’s best friend in the movie, who (LAST SPOILER WARNING!) eventually turns to the dark side and goes on to become the founder of COBRA. That’s right, he plays Cobra Commander. Wow. This falls in line with what what we heard from some of the script reviews, which is that COBRA only actually forms towards the end of the film. I think this makes him the same character that had the laughably horrible moniker “Cool Dude” in early drafts of the script.

So with all that said, do you think Gordon-Levitt is the right man for the job? I know a lot of people think he’s not, but I am actually kind of intrigued by the possibility. First of all Cobra Commander wasn’t a big muscle-bound guy, and secondly, I think Gordon-Levitt could bring a performance so over the top and ridiculously evil that it could actually rival something like, say, Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York. Hey, they both have hyphenated last names, so it can’t be that crazy of a comparison! Say what you will about the spotty casting they’ve done so far, but this is one performance I am looking forward to seeing. Thoughts?

  1. I’ve never seen Levitt play a bad guy, but his roles in both Brick and The Lookout give me some faith that he could do it. In both of those movies his character was pretty morose and maybe a bit eerie at times. Whenever I see him in a movie it seems as though I get the same feeling that he’s going to be one of the next generation of great actors, so there’s always the chance that this movie could toss him into the public spotlight. Here’s hoping, anyway.

  2. I have to say the way you did this entry was perfect. Along with your decision not to post the Spock pictures, this makes me admire the integrity of the site. I wish everybody shared this view on ’scoops’/spoilers. But I guess there can be only one WEBMASTER.

  3. I’d rather see this guy in any film than Shia Lebeouf.

  4. I liked how when you click the read more button you said “now that those freaks are gone”. Gold, freaking Gold.

  5. We have some kind of mass amnesia in the UK when it comes to GI Joe, i mean, i remember having all the figures and vehicles and reading the comics, but a lot of people just dont have the fond memories i do!I think maybe it was bigger in the US.I always thought a movie would be cool though, cant wait to see Snake eyes and Stormshadow!Does anyone remember the mail away figure of ‘The Fridge’ you could get as a special offer?

  6. Im really not feeling the direction theyre taking with this movie…
