Weird Web Wednesdays: Tom Cruise Is My Master

weirdwebtomcruisescientology.jpg

This week on Weird Web Wednesday, we’d like to direct your attention to a creepy promotional video that’s been floating around the web featuring Tom Cruise in full-on scientology brainwashing mode (complete with Mission Impossible backing music). It keeps getting pulled off YouTube by the powers that be, but Defamer currently has a copy of the whole thing in its entirety. It’s quite a disturbing watch. Also this week, don’t miss a musical mash-up of one of the most memorable lines from There Will Be Blood, Burger King’s new viral marketing video, and some reactions to the newest filthy video to hit the web, 4 Girls Fingerpainting. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

  1. According to his church:
“The video was Cruise’s acceptance speech after he was awarded the religion’s “Freedom Medal.” It was shown to 5,000 church parishioners and guests.”
And it was never meant to be public or promotional in any way…

    Either way…this guys a nutjob.

  2. Agreed. Even if this was for the church members, it’s still creepy as hell. What surprises me most about it is that in a recent film I saw for a religion class they were talking to a woman who had previously been involved in Scientology (the film dates back to the early 90’s) and she used the car crash analogy too. Further suggests that there’s some weird brainwashing/programming type thing going on too.

Creepy. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch Top Gun the same way again.

  3. That is pretty creepy that the same analogy would show up like that. I’m sure Scientology uses severe brainwashing techniques though, otherwise how could they possibly make adults believe in this nonsense?

  4. Am I the only one getting the vibe that the Tom Cruise video isn’t actually a legit video in the sense that it was produced by Scientologists for Scientologists so much as it’s someone who has gone ahead and edited a bunch of clips together to create a faux recruitment video? The ending of it just screams satire at me, especially considering the voiceover is done in a Movie Trailer Guy type voice. I don’t know, I’m having trouble taking it seriously. I mean, the stuff coming out of Cruise’s mouth is relatively alarming, but the whole thing just seems so fake to me.

  5. It is funny that as an actor and person that makes movies things to be seen. Cruise doesn’t like spectators.

  6. loved the down fall of hd dvd video What movie was that taken from?also there where some pretty funny die hard movies, The day after die hard was good and so was the music video “die die die hard as we can.” good stuff added that one to my favorites.

  7. The clip was from “Der Utergang” (2004) A movie worth watching if you can.

  8. ….if you can find it.

  9. I don’t think Tom Cruise is any different than anyone who is very passionate about their religion. I’m not a supporter of scientology and honestly, I don’t quite understand it that much, but Tom Cruise doesn’t seem all that wacko to me.

Seriously, there are some pretty insane things about all religions and he believes in his just like others believe in theirs. He was also just given a huge honour. I was expecting something more out of this video for it to appear in this column.

At most Tom Cruise is just a weird guy….but so are Jay and Sean and all of the rest of the people in Filmjunk’s Death Proof parody.
