Cloverfield Reviews Are In… And Apparently It’s Really Good

Well last night was the night that all the big boys got to see their advance screenings of Matt Reeves, Drew Goddard and J.J. Abrams’ Cloverfield. I don’t normally scour the internet for early reviews on very many movies, but this is one of my most anticipated movies of the year and with all the mystery surrounding the flick, I’ve been dying to see if it delivers.
Good news folks… apparently the movie kicks ass. I haven’t read a single negative review yet, and almost all of the reviews have been gushing about how effective the whole handheld, ground level perspective works for a monster movie. The real question is whether or not it can perform well at the box office this weekend. I certainly have my doubts, as the non-internet marketing has been somewhat lacking. Regardless, I cannot wait to experience it for myself. Here are links to a few of the reviews floating around the web today:

thank god! let’s hope this year isn’t a year of disappointments like last year!
Posted by bert belgium on January 16th, 2008to read some bad reviews go to rotten tomatoes, it’s at 50%, but theres only 6 reviews there anyway so i’m still pumped for Cloverfield.
Posted by Drew on January 16th, 2008You’re missing another one!

There you go, now you’ve got the complete set…
Posted by Alex on January 16th, 2008Nice, thanks Alex!
Posted by Sean on January 16th, 2008If it really does live up to the hype, I’ll be interested in seeing if it’s as good as The Host. Obviously they will be totally different styles, but as long as Cloverfield stays away from ‘Hollywood superficiality,’ it’s got a chance. For me, that last few years have been return of the good monster movies: The Descent, The Host, Planet Terror (if zombies count), I Am Legend (I liked it)… and now Cloverfield. I love this genre! We need a return of sci-fi next. Too many bad fantasy ones recently.
I’m totally pumped for this one. Already making plans for it. The previews are misleading… it makes you think it takes place in Tokyo or something because of the first couple spoken lines and shots of big buildings.
Posted by joe on January 16th, 2008dammit, just found out it only comes out here on the 6th february, dammit!! but i’m still trying to stay spoilerfree!!!
Posted by bert belgium on January 16th, 2008I have my reservations about this movie. I havent gotten caught up into the internet hype about the monster cause in reality, the monster is a made up entity. Its not like they are hiding the redesign of Godzilla. I give them credit for being able to hype up an original project though.
I think, though, I will wait to see what some of the more prominent critics say about this one. I think I may end up just catching a $4 showing this weekend.
Posted by Captain N on January 16th, 2008When I first heard about Cloverfield I was very excited, then I lost interest. Then I saw the trailer before Transformers and was really excited again. Then I lost interest once more. Then I read Harry’s review on AICN a few days ago and got really excited again. Once more, a few days before it’s release, I’m not that excited and kind of skeptical. I’ll probably be seeing it on Friday, but I’m supposed to go see Juno tonight, and I’m honestly more excited for that.
Posted by Rian on January 16th, 2008None of my friends or family want to see Cloverfield. They need to have advertising shoved in front of their faces to get excited about any movie. I’ll be seeing this by myself this weekend
Posted by Primal on January 16th, 2008True, but don’t forget there are no recognizable stars in this movie either.
I think the mystery helped generate hype initially, but now that it’s about to hit theatres, a lot of people simply won’t go if they don’t know what they’re getting themselves into. Plus there’s probably some Blair Witch backlash still going on out there, with people complaining that they don’t want to feel sick while watching the movie.
Posted by Sean on January 16th, 2008Bourne Ultimatum did well in the Box Office despite the shakey cam so i dont think that will be a problem, the only thing i think there will be against it is the lackluster non viral marketing.
Posted by Drew on January 16th, 2008Oh man, you didn’t post a link to my review…..

Posted by paulie on January 17th, 2008NOT WORTH THE HIPE!
Posted by Gena on January 20th, 2008“If you have not seen it yet and thinking on seeing it… DONT. It sucks. It has a good hipe going for it but not good and the first 20 min of the movie Drags on and on. It is like Blair Witch project..but in New York…. bouncy video for the entire movie is from someone recording the goings on.. then you get glimpse of this big creature and then these little ones that if you get bit by one…you will die cause if it does not eat you will will have a virus like in that movie outbreak… still unsure what the hell it is as we never find out other then at the very end look close and you will see something fall out of the sky and hit the water…so I am guessing this thing came from outer space!Hate how it just ends… Sucks… just wait for DVD. I am sure they will make another one sense so much went unanswered.”
^ that is an absolutely awful awful review.
for one, “HIPE”. hipe ladies and gentlemen.
“bouncy video for the entire movie”
I feel no sympathy for the people who didnt see this coming and can’t handle it.
“we never find out other then at the very end..”
I feel no sympathy for those who have to have everything explained for them.
you’re lame Gena, you just trotted out the same stupid excuses that I was sick of ten years ago when BWP came out.
Posted by Goon on January 20th, 2008this movie SUCKS so much ass … it plays in a first person camera … and the monster look STUPID Gozilla is more scary and a better movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Boomer on January 20th, 2008another bad review
“it plays in a first person camera”
“the monster look STUPID”
“Gozilla is more scary”
what do these have to do with the overall quality of the film?
I didn’t like 300, can I critique it like this?:
Posted by Goon on January 21st, 2008“Man, there were half naked guys fighting middle east people, and Rambo III had more killing”
