Roger Avary Arrested for Manslaughter?

Pretty crazy news this morning regarding one of the key players from 90’s independent cinema. Roger Avary, co-writer of Pulp Fiction and writer/director of Killing Zoe, was arrested on the possibility of drunk driving and manslaughter. He was involved in a collision last night shortly after midnight, in which the driver of the other car was killed. Avary’s wife Gretchen was also ejected from the car in the accident, but is now in stable condition.

In recent years, Avary has become known as a writer for video game and CG movies, in particular Silent Hill and Beowulf, along with the upcoming Driver adaptation. It remains to be seen what this could mean for his career. Avary posted $50,000 bail, but it sounds like he is going to be charged and will need to hire a good lawyer. Manslaughter is no petty crime, and as much as I respect the guy as a filmmaker, if he was indeed driving while intoxicated, then I certainly hope his semi-celebrity status doesn’t get him off the hook.

  1. At first I was horrified by this headline because I love some of the stuff Avary has done (Pulp Fiction, Rules of Attraction, etc.), but of course if he is to blame he’d better not get away with it just because he’s a part of the film industry. Also, if I may sound a bit cynical for a moment, he hasn’t produced many worthwhile projects lately, so the movie-going masses won’t necessarily be losing out on much if he is put away.
