Justice League: The New Frontier DVD Trailer
After all this endless talk about the seemingly doomed Justice League live action movie, it’s been easy to forget that there is another Justice League movie coming out next month that could actually be pretty decent. I’m talking about Justice League: The New Frontier, the direct to DVD animated movie based on the award-winning DC: The New Frontier comic book mini-series by Darwyn Cooke.
I haven’t been too impressed with the animated features that Marvel has been putting out so far, and I have yet to see DC’s Superman: Doomsday, but this movie looks a little different. For one thing, it’s set in the 50’s, a time period that I’d love to see any live action comic book movie take place in. For another, the art design and animation seem pretty faithful to the Golden Age style of the graphic novel… which is to say, it’s not quite like all of these other animated movies based on comics.
Justice League: The New Frontier is coming to DVD, Blu-ray and HD-DVD on February 26th. (Note: The 2-disc and high-def releases come with a couple extra documentaries plus three bonus episodes of Justice League Unlimited.) Check out the new trailer below.

While the trailer does make this movie look a bit better than some of the stuff Marvel and DC have been putting out lately, I’d really like to see one of them put some extra time and money into a really well-made 2D animated movie. Perhaps one worthy of being released in theaters. Each time I see one of these animated films I can’t help thinking that if a little more effort went into them they wouldn’t have to be forced to be direct to DVD releases. It may be more affordable for the company that way (really, I have no idea), but if they made one really good movie on the level of something like Ghost in the Shell or Akira, I think that would be much more rewarding and allow for them to make more even better films.
Posted by Rian on January 14th, 2008How about a well made 3d animated movie? With the success of Beowulf, we could have Alex Ross’ art come to life.
Posted by Phil on January 15th, 2008As realistically as Alex Ross paints, we could have his art come to life by putting spandex suits on his friends who model for him and let them prance around in front of a camera. All joking aside though, I’ve got nothing wrong with 3D and in fact love a lot of 3D films, but I hate to see 2D animation going down the tubes. For one thing, it seems to be viewed by a lot of people as an inferior medium these days. For two, just about all 2D animation nowadays is that angular, blocky fucking Bruce Timm style, and I’m getting tired of that crap. That’s why I suggest that Marvel and DC should try something new and interesting-looking, perhaps in the vein of Tekkonkinkreet or The Triplets of Belleville or something. Even a more realistic or normal style like that of Akira or The Iron Giant. Just something different for once.
