Will Christopher Nolan’s Next Movie Be an Adaptation of Comic Book The Exec?

If last Friday’s poll is any indication, clearly The Dark Knight is the one movie that everyone is looking forward to this year — probably even moreso than Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And while I think it will probably be a decent flick, I’m actually more interested to find out what project Christopher Nolan might take on afterwards. You may remember that in between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, of course, he directed The Prestige, which I thought was fantastic. Now there is speculation that Nolan may follow up The Dark Knight with a comic book adaptation of a different sort.

Back in 2003, Nolan reportedly optioned the rights to a small comic book called The Exec, written by the late Doug Miers. The plan was for Nolan’s brother Jonathan to adapt the comic into a screenplay, with the possibility of Chris directing after Batman Begins. Now there is some speculation once again that The Exec may be moving forward, which would make sense if the script was completed prior to the WGA strike. The comic takes place in a satirical near-future society where power-hungry corporations literally go to war with each other and conduct business with guns and grenades.

This sounds great, although it also sounds a heck of a lot like the Max Barry novel Jennifer Government, which I just read a few months ago. The rights for that book were scooped up by Clooney and Soderbergh’s production company a while back, so you can bet if one of these movies gets greenlit, the other one will also go into production immediately. Either way, I’d love to see Nolan direct The Exec, especially if Christian Bale were on board. Think about it… American Psycho meets Rescue Dawn meets Harsh Times, ’nuff said!

  1. Prestige and the Illusionist

Batman and Justice League (featuring Batman)

    The Exec and Jennifer Government??

Why does everyone want to make the same as Christopher Nolan?

  2. Or why does Christopher Nolan want to make the same as everybody else?

Christopher Nolan is alright, but lets not get carried away. Memento is his only really interesting work, and that was 8 years ago. I like The Prestige to an extent, but there is just so much hyperrealism that the store, in the end, loses all credibility and relevance to me. It has some cool moments that seem historically credible though, like the story of the old asian magician. I liked The Illusionist alittle bit more, since it was more mythical and not as concerned with trying to be clever and real. I can honestly say that Christopher Nolans hyperrealism that he started with Batman does absolutely nothing for me. It just comes off as cheesy and ridiculous.

ANYWAY, this comic sounds like a fun movie. I love satire like this. I can’t say I’m on board with Christian Bale (unless he gets surgery to have his tongue smaller, so that he won’t sound like his mouth is filled with it whenever he talks, that may make me give him another chance), but if Christopher Nolan does it, it’s probably a no-brainer.

How about Hollywood gets their head out of their populism asses and get Paul Verhoeven on board to do this film? He does the best sci-fi satire in the world.
