New To Theatres This Weekend - Jan. 4, 2008

Not much out there in theatres on this first weekend of 2008, but thankfully, if you haven’t yet seen Juno, odds are it’s finally playing in a theatre near you. The only other major release is the J-horror remake One Missed Call starring Ed Burns and Shannyn Sossamon, which is currently sitting at a putrid 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Yikes. Joe Wright’s Atonement is expanding, while the Guillermo Del Toro-produced Spanish horror flick The Orphanage (El Orfanato) is also in select theatres. Unofficially, it also seems that P.T. Anderson’s There Will Be Blood is expanding to a few more theatres, but I don’t know why they wouldn’t choose to roll it out more quickly during this particular dry spell.
Atonement (expanding)
Juno (wide)
One Missed Call
The Orphanage (limited)
There Will Be Blood (expanding)

One Missed Call….so like The Ring.

I liked “The Orphanage” but it reminded me a lot of “The Others” - still a good watch.
I might give “Atonement” a second viewing but otherwise, I’m staying home with a few rentals until “There Will Be Blood” opens in my side of the country next week.
