The Ruins Trailer
At first glance, the synopsis for The Ruins reads like a lot of other horror movies that have been coming out lately: “a group of friends whose leisurely Mexican holiday takes a turn for the worse when they… embark on a remote archaeological dig in the jungle, where something evil lives among the ruins”. Basically, it sounds like a rip-off of Turistas, which was a rip-off of Hostel to begin with. But my interest was piqued when I noticed that the movie is based on a book written by Scott B. Smith, who also wrote the book and screenplay for Sam Raimi’s A Simple Plan.
Now that I’ve watched the first trailer for The Ruins, I gotta say… this looks pretty promising. I don’t know anything about director Carter Smith, but the trailer just struck the right tone to get me hooked. After all, The Exorcist started with an archaeological dig too, and the way they did it there was pretty damn creepy. The movie stars Shawn Ashmore (Iceman from the X-Men movies), Laura Ramsey (The Covenant) and Jonathan Tucker (The Black Donnellys). Peep the trailer below and see what you think. The Ruins is slated to hit theatres on April 4th.

God damn, I cannot wait for this movie! I’ve never read the book, but when I first heard about this project a few months ago I read all about it on Wikipedia and it sounds fucking great. The trailer looks really promising as well. Primitive people who sacrifice tourists to a living jungle that fucks with and devours them? Gold!
Posted by Rian on December 24th, 2007I love the “Road Trip Gone Wrong” horror movies, but I dunno. Definitely inspired by Apocalypto, but this doesn’t look like it could win me over.
Posted by Baychuk on December 24th, 2007This movie is based on a book, so I doubt it’s got anything to do with Apocalypto.

Oh, I understand that…just the whole Mayan sacrifice aura reminded me of Apocalypto.
Posted by Baychuk on December 25th, 2007I borrowed the novel of Scott Smith’s The Ruins from the local library two days ago and have already read all 319 pages of it. To say that this is the best book I’ve ever read would probably sound pretty jarring, but I read maybe a book a year if I’m lucky, so it doesn’t have too much competition. Needless to say, I’m more excited than ever for this movie to come out now. Re-watching the trailer, I can already notice a few changes that are being made between the novel and the film, but with the author of the book also having written the script for the movie, I have faith that it will at least be a good representation of the source material.
