Sam Raimi Returns to Horror with Drag Me To Hell

After spending a good 6 or 7 years of his career focused on the massive Spider-Man franchise, it looks like Sam Raimi is finally getting a chance to return to his roots. The next movie that he has chosen to direct will be a much more low-key supernatural thriller called Drag Me To Hell.

Based on a script co-written with his brother Ivan back in the 90’s, the movie involves “the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse” and will be produced through Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures. While he intends to deliver some serious scares with the film, he does not plan to rely on gore and violence like he did in The Evil Dead. Producer and long-time Raimi collaborator Rob Tapert had this to say: “The appeal to Sam on Drag Me to Hell was returning to what he had once done and loved doing, which was entertaining a very specific group of fans and providing a roller coaster ride for them… He doesn’t have the enormous pressure here that goes with handling a hundreds of millions of dollars franchise.”

It’s certainly an exciting prospect for fans of Raimi’s older work. However, he may not continue playing in the low budget world for long. According to Variety, Raimi could still very well pick up the reins on The Hobbit after he finishes shooting Hell.

  2. This is exciting news. Especially after I recently saw the trailer for Bruce Campbell’s new self-referential movie that looks like it’s really going to let me down.
