Monday Morning Box Office Report: Dec. 17, 2007

boxofficedec17_07.jpgHey, who would have thought people actually enjoy going to see movies in December? It turns out I Am Legend absolutely destroyed the box office over the weekend, pulling in $76.5 million, a new opening weekend record for December and a personal best for Will Smith. Was it the star power of Will Smith that attracted everyone to the multiplexes, or was it the idea of a disaster/horror hybrid? Who knows. The truly scary thing is that Alvin and the Chipmunks also did some pretty huge numbers in spite of the craptacular reviews, earning $45 million of its own. The two flicks essentially blew away the competition, with The Golden Compass placing 3rd with another $9 million, followed by Enchanted and No Country for Old Men. Everything below that was $2 million or less. Looking ahead to the movies that are still being released this month, it could be a very big December indeed.

  1. As low as the weekly numbers continue to be, I’m glad to see that No Country For Old Men seems to be hanging in there pretty well.
