Karate Kid Remake Still Happening… Stephen Chow to Star as Mr. Miyagi?

It appears that those rumours about a remake of The Karate Kid may not have been completely bogus after all. Initial reports stated that Will Smith would produce the project and that he wanted his son Jaden to star as “Daniel-san”. While that part has since been debunked, we have news today that the project is still being shopped around, and that Stephen Chow is actually in talks to play Mr. Miyagi! Can you believe it?

According to Asian Popcorn, Will Smith met with Stephen Chow while doing press for I Am Legend in Hong Kong, and he asked Chow to direct and produce the film, in addition to starring as the wise old Miyagi. Chow had this to say: “I’m very fond of The Karate Kid and would love to join in the remake project, no matter as a producer, director or actor… but it depends on my schedule. As you know, next year I will work on two movies, Dragon Ball and Journey to the West.” I am not quite sure what to say at this point. Obviously if Chow is involved, suddenly the project will have instant credibility (much like Dragon Ball). The one thing that seems fishy is that I’m pretty sure I heard that I Am Legend was banned in China. Still, I suppose Smith would still be over there promoting it nonetheless. Assuming this story is true, does this change your feelings on a Karate Kid remake?

  1. it may be banned in mainland China, but it will still play in Hong Kong. And I’m certain it will show in China regardless. I saw Revenge of the Sith in China the same day it opened in the USA eventhough Lucasfilm officially said it wouldn’t show the movie there due to piracy and the length of time to translate it. But I saw it, and it was translated…
