Justice League Movie Gets Renamed to American Heroes?

Word on the street is that they’ve been mulling over a possible title change for the upcoming Justice League movie, and while I agree that the phrase “Justice League” may seem a bit dated and corny for modern audiences, it’s hard to imagine it being called anything else. Foolishly I had assumed that the motivation behind a new name had something to do with removing the patriotic connotations. Imagine my surprise when I heard that the new title may actually end up being American Heroes!

At the moment, this is still unconfirmed (along with just about everything else we supposedly know about the flick), but the scoop is said to have come from an interview with Christian Bale on Australian radio where he said he has “nothing to do with American Heroes, and their Batman will be different to our Batman”. If it is true, it’s pretty easy to see where the marketing folks came up with this name. There have only been about a billion other movies in the past 5 or 10 years that start with the word “American”, and it does give the illusion of being the definitive take on a subject. Then you mix in the success of a certain comic book-based TV show called Heroes, and blammo… there’s your title. I just think the people behind this film are floundering right now. Is the title really going to have any bearing on the success of this flick? No. There are bigger issues at hand, and if they think a little P.R. sleight of hand can change people’s perceptions of the production, they’re dead wrong.

  1. It cant be true. It sounds too stupid. If it turns out true, which hopefully it wont, then clearly its just to pull in the overly patriotic americans or something to that effect. I can’t imagine them actually titling it American Heroes outside of America, if they do. Talk about a sure fire way to cause a movie to bomb.

I’ve honestly got my suspicions that this movie isn’t going to happen. Something will happen before the shoot date. This whole project seems…odd….. It shouldn’t happen this way. This should be treated as a pinnacle moment in comic book to film history. It should be treated with the utmost respect. Yet, it seems so slapped together.

WB should focus their attentions on relaunching Superman with a new crew. I think that would pay off better.

  2. Seriously, just call the damn thing Justice League Of America. Suits are just dumb. How out of touch can you get? If the film is good audiences outside of the US will go see it. Period.

This thing is doomed (even with Miller), we might as well admit it now. It absolutely reeks of suit-induced homogenizing. Kill me now.

  3. Excuse for a moment while I tap into my comic book geekness.

At this point, they might be better of scrapping this and re-thinking 10 years down the road. In that time we could have a couple more Batman movies, a couple more Superman movies and probably Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern films. Hell, we could have a comedy Plastic man film.

Or…this would never work, but it might be cool. They could do a Justice League film that focuses on the famed “Detroit” League. Led by Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Elongated Man and Zatanna with young heroes Steel, Vibe, Gypsy and Vixen and make it darker. They could even kill off Steel and Vibe in the movie as they did in the comics.

Would the latter draw any money? No.

If they call it Amercian Heroes then David Cronenberg/Atom Egoyan/Bruce MacDonald should get on the band wagon and churn out an Alpha Flight movie. You can’t tell me Sasquatch and Puck banter wouldn’t be gold. I love the ‘originality’ and steroetypes of Canadian superheroes.

  4. I can’t imagine this thing going through production and finding it’s way into theaters. Over half of what movies make, nowadays, comes from overseas markets. Naming this thing “American Heroes” will, efficiently, nix that income and make it a riskier investment, since it will have to mostly rely upon the American market to make it’s money back.

I am completely astounded by how much WB is f*cking this up. You would think studios would eves drop on the internet to figure out what the fan base for these franchises want and then give it to them. It’s not like we’re being

  5. quiet about this.
