80’s Cult Horror Flick The Gate Gets a Remake… in 3D?

I have never seen the low budget 80’s horror flick The Gate, which stars a young Stephen Dorff as a kid who accidentally opens a portal to hell in his own backyard, but I believe it has a bit of local lore surrounding it. It was a Canadian production (although director Tibor Takács is Hungarian) and both the original and its sequel were shot somewhere outside of Toronto, Ontario. The movie is currently pretty tough to find on DVD, and most people have never even heard of it — which makes it a perfect candidate for a remake. But get this: Randall William Cook, the Oscar-winning animation designer/supervisor for WETA on the Lord of the Rings films, is the man looking to remake it… and in 3D, no less!

Cook’s experience certainly gives this remake the credibility that most horror remakes are lacking as of late, and although there’s been no indication that either WETA or Peter Jackson would have any involvement in the project, it does sound like something Peter Jackson would have loved to do back during the days of Braindead and Bad Taste. What can I say… this is one remake that I’m totally onboard for, with or without PJ. Let’s just hope the 3D element doesn’t mean this is going to become a fully animated PG-13 Monster House-type deal.

  1. I grew up on this film. Pretty scary stuff. DOES NOT NEED TO BE REMADE IMO. Sorry for the caps, just pissed that horror sucks so bad now with all of these remakes.

  2. You missed an interesting trivia point here. Randall William Cook also was responsible for the FX of the original “The Gate” – wich were really impressive. He also played the monster (and was responsible for the FX)in Tibor Tacacs next movie “Hardcover” wich also is one of those lost movies worth sesrching for.

So if anyone is a good choice for remaking Gate its of course Cook. :)

  3. Nice, thanks for the additional info theDia. I think it will be pretty interesting to see the same FX guy revisit the movie 20 years later with all new technology.
