Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures Gets Sequel Happy
If there’s one genre where endless strings of sequels and low budget knockoffs continue to make money, it’s definitely the horror genre. Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are certainly no strangers to this fact, and although their production company Ghost House Pictures has been churning out a steady stream of crap over the past few years, they’re not going to let that stop them from turning these sub-par movies into sub-par franchises! With the success of 30 Days of Night, they’ve been able to bankroll sequels to just about every one of their previous movies which means we can now look forward to The Grudge 3, The Messengers 2, Rise 2, and Boogeyman 3! Based on the upcoming DTV release of Boogeyman 2 in January, I am assuming these will all be direct to DVD as well. I suppose there’s always an audience for this kind of stuff out there, and who knows — maybe some of them will actually turn out to be kind of fun. Cheap-o productions like this are always a great way for young directors to learn the ropes. But at the same time, I can’t help but think it’s pretty damn ballsy to assume anyone actually cares to see a sequel to The Messengers or Rise (without Lucy Liu, of course!).

Maybe I’m crazy, but I kind of enjoyed Boogeyman. It took that age-old idea of the monster under the bed or in the closet and made it kind of creepy. The CG was bad and the acting wasn’t top notch, but it’s concept kept me from despising it.
