The 13th Disciple: Jesus Gets An Evil Twin
What’s with this sudden rash of strange Jesus movies? Last week we heard about an epic green screen action movie based on The Aquarian Gospel, now this week there is a report from Reuters about an upcoming film by German director Robert Sigl called The 13th Disciple, which will be set in present day India, star primarily Indian actors, and be based on the fictional premise that Jesus had an evil twin brother. Described as “a fantasy-adventure film”, the movie will focus on two German archaeologists who discover that Jesus’ twin has been reincarnated as the nefarious leader of a modern day religious sect.
Any movie that toys with Christian beliefs is obviously bound to spark controversy, so it seems strange to me that anyone would risk upsetting powerful religious groups when instead you could potentially have them supporting your film. Then again, if the movie is not being aimed at a North American audience, this may only be a minor concern. As it turns out, Robert Sigl previously directed some episodes of Lexx, so this could end up being a pretty wacky flick. On the other hand, I suspect it be mostly harmless since Jesus does not actually appear in the movie, and according to producer Mario Stefan, “Our film is not based on true events nor is it giving any religious message.”

Why does this seem strange to anyone after the jews made Passion of the Christ one of the biggest successes in history?
Posted by Henrik on November 28th, 2007So you’re saying The Passion of the Christ was successful because Jewish groups criticized it? Or was it because all the Christian groups took all their church members out to see it on opening weekend?
Posted by Sean on November 28th, 2007It was because the jewish groups wouldn’t shut up about it, so everybody in the world wanted to see what the fuzz was about.
I’m sure all those same Christian groups arranged the same trips for their church members to go see The Nativity Story, or maybe even Evan Almighty.
