Better Late Than Never: Roger Ebert’s Best of 2006 List

At a time when most movie critics are starting to think about how to construct their Best of 2007 list, Roger Ebert has finally gotten around to posting his best movies from the year previous. You see, he was hospitalized back in June 2006 and missed out on basically half of the movies that came out that year. He has finally caught himself up to speed, and now offers his favourites, with a small benefit of hindsight that no one else had. His choices aren’t all that surprising, with the exception of perhaps Ramin Bahrani’s Man Push Cart, and Tom Tykwer’s Perfume: The Story of a Murderer which severely divided a lot of critics. It was also interesting that he included both Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima together as one entry, which seems a bit like cheating to me! Check out his write-ups and more honourable mentions over on his website at the link below.

1. Pan’s Labyrinth
2. Bubble
3. Children of Men
4. The Departed
5. The Lives of Others
6. United 93
7. Flags of our Fathers / Letters from Iwo Jima
8. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
9. Babel
10. Man Push Cart

  1. I’m happy to see “The Lives of Others” on his list though a bit disappointing that it’s that far down the list but most interesting is the inclusion of Steven Soderbergh’s “Bubble” at number 2 – sure didn’t see that one coming. I’m happy to see someone else liked Tykwer’s “Perfume”. I think we’re going to be looking back on that one down the road and saying just how overlooked it is/was.
