Be Kind Rewind Fake Rush Hour 2 Trailer
One of the movies I’m most looking forward to in early 2008 is Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind, in which Jack Black plays a video store clerk who accidentally erases a bunch of VHS tapes with his magnetized brain. This leaves him and his co-worker (Mos Def) with no choice but to remake all of the missing movies on their own! As a clever way of marketing the film, they’ve started releasing fake trailers online for the low budget remakes that are featured in the film. It’s interesting how on the one hand Be Kind Rewind seems very dated since it deals with video tapes as opposed to DVDs, and yet on the other hand it’s also a very timely commentary on the age of mash-ups and YouTube. Check out their fake trailer for Rush Hour 2 below, and head over to the YouTube section of the movie’s official website to see trailers for a few others including Robocop, Ghostbusters and Boyz in Da Hood. Be Kind Rewind hits theatres on January 25th, 2008.

I think the idea of this is amazing, but I have to admit the fake trailers on the (awesome) site, has me worried. I didn’t really find them funny, and I was just reminded that Jack Black is going to be hamming it up throughout the movie.
Posted by Henrik on November 26th, 2007I have to admit, on some level it could be relying too much on the fact that bad acting and home-made costumes are going to be inherently funny. It’s almost like a Scary Movie-style spoof where they parody a scene from a popular movie without even writing actual jokes… they think it’s automatically funny just because it’s a reference to something everyone is familiar with. But on the other hand, this is Michel Gondry we’re talking about, so I think there’s going to be plenty of other weirdness going on to make it worthwhile.
Posted by Sean on November 26th, 2007Yeah Sean you must have listened to my podcast about “stupid comedies” where my buddy Zack talked about how they don’t write jokes in these newer parody movies (though I’m sure he’s not the only person to figure that out). Gondry and parody might make it more fun than usual I’ll look forward to a matinee of this some dreary Wednesday.
Posted by Ian on November 26th, 2007Nope I didn’t listen to it but I’ll have to check it out! I think it’s a good point, and that’s why all these spoof movies like Meet the Spartans and Epic Movie are so damn easy to churn out.
Posted by Sean on November 26th, 2007It’s also why they aren’t as funny or really funny at all compared to proper parody films like Airplane! and The Naked Gun.
