Chinese Doctors on Lust, Caution: Don’t Try These Sex Positions At Home

Ang Lee’s latest film Lust, Caution has been blowing open the box office in its first two weeks of release in China, earning approximately $12 million so far. Some are predicting it will be the biggest movie of the year overseas. Of course, one has to wonder how much the explicit sex scenes in the movie have helped with its popularity. I’m not saying the movie doesn’t have other merits (I haven’t seen it yet myself), but it certainly drew more attention when Focus Features announced they would bravely release it with an NC-17 rating here in North America. Although the cut of the film released in mainland China required approximately seven minutes of footage to be edited out, many moviegoers have flocked to Hong Kong where they can still see the full version. Now Chinese doctors are warning the public that they should be careful not to attempt some of the sexual positions seen in the film. I kid you not!

Yu Zao, a deputy director at a women’s hospital in China, had this to say: “Most of the sexual maneuvers in Lust, Caution are in abnormal body positions… Only women with comparatively flexible bodies that have gymnastics or yoga experience are able to perform them. For average people to blindly copy them could lead to unnecessary physical harm.” Wow, now I’ve really gotta see this movie! Are they really that crazy, or is this just another form of the government suppressing people’s freedom? Either way, medical warnings about movies are always good for business. Anyone out there seen the flick?

  1. No but if they slap that on the poster they could market it as the next American Pie.

  2. Well, China and US sure are two crazy countries. People in the rest of the world are used to explicit content in the movies and they don’t make such a fuss about it.

  3. This movie is really good. I didn’t really think there were weird positions.. but then again that’s not really something you pay attention to.

  4. There are a couple of scenes where the two leads are twisted like pretzels around each other and I imagine that’s where the warnings are coming from because I cannot fathom how anyone other than trained gymnasts could ever contort into those positions.
