Hellboy 2: The Golden Army Renamed to HBII?

The first Hellboy movie wasn’t necessarily one of my favourite flicks of 2004, but I appreciated the fine line it walked between dark comedy and fantasy/action/adventure. Now, as this year is slowly drawing to a close and we start to look towards next year’s line-up of films, I am finding myself really looking forward to the sequel. However, I recently stumbled across a surprising little tidbit regarding the movie that had me rolling my eyes and wondering, “What the hell are they thinking?”. Although I haven’t read any official announcement on the subject, it seems that the film, previously titled Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, is now going under the newer, hipper moniker HBII.

I’m sure plenty of people have used this abbreviation before, and maybe this is just a case of the studio embracing it further. But I found it strange that on sites like Box Office Mojo and AOL Moviefone, the movie is now actually listed as “HB II (formerly Hellboy 2: The Golden Army)”. The official website would seem to confirm this with only a simple BHII logo in the top corner. Hey, remember when someone thought it was a good idea to shorten The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to simply LXG? Boy, that sure made people a lot less confused! I bet there was marketing team sitting around somewhere doing focus testing, who suddenly realized that “HBII” was a lot easier for teens to text message to each other than “Hellboy 2″. As in:

Kid #1: where r u?
Kid #2: im goin 2 c hbii

At any rate, I know it’s just a title, and maybe I’m jumping to conclusions here. I just thought it was a little bit silly… don’t you?

  1. “Kid #1: where r u?
    Kid #2: im goin 2 c hbii”

^^^^ funniest thing i’ve read today.

  2. Another abbreviated title that pissed me off when I first heard it was ‘X2′ for the second X-Men movie. I still don’t like the title, but I got over it, and I have a feeling the same will happen with this one. For now I agree though, HBII is a crap name.

  3. thanks for reading my mail on the show

hbii (the acronym) looks kind of dumb. it’s not *that* big of a movie that people will know what it is by abbreviation.

  4. Good point Joe, there’s a certain arrogance about officially naming a movie with abbreviations, and it’s like they are trying to make Hellboy seem more important than it really is.

  5. It makes the sequel sound like a pencil!

Personally i am more excited about going to see ‘The Golden Army’ than…..hb2.!

Cant wait too see it regardless of the title though, should be very cool!

I think your right, they are trying to make it sound a bit bigger and grander than it really is.
